I'm curious for those who really strive for high MPG what speeds you might set your cruise control at on 70mph highways? A decent part of my commute is highway and I have been running 65 without any issues regarding pissing people off or causing unsafe conditions. I always run in the slow lane and adjust speed if needed or to be courteous. I have been pretty steady at 39mpg give or take a few points. I think I've only hit 41 once.
There are no 70 mph highways by me. On the 65 mph highways I am usually traveling about 60-62, and about 52-60 on the 55 mph highways.
I also don't use cruise except when traveling with others. My right foot underwent hypermiling training on my previous car, so it can do better at driving for MPG's than the cruise control.
Our highways are 65 and I travel on 70mph highways on occasion as well. I like to stay about 10-15 mph over the speed limit. Generally on a commute on 65 mph I set cruise at around 76mph. My eco gets ~ 45mpg at that speed.

If you can avg 45mpg at 76mph your overall mpg should be over 50. Is it?
I found my sweet spot to be around 62 mph so I try to stay between 60 and 67 mph on most hwys.
Depends, on my commute i never hit 30 or 40 because of traffic. On an average night or weekend i always drive at 65 or 70, any lower and i piss people off... Don't believe me? Try it, even cops will fly by you and you will be hitting 65.
I drive between 70-75mph on Michigan 70MPH highways. I have 6M Eco and I NEVER hit 45 average at those speeds nor do I come close to 45 Instant at 75mph(high 30's at best). I wish my mileage was a bit better but I know its completely related to my speed. If I was willing to go 65 in slow lane I would do much better. If I go 60mph on the 2 lane highways with minimal stop/go I get 45MPG average, similar to other forum members. IMHO, I think some people tend to inflate their mileage is at higher speeds.
70 mph. Never more. Doesn't matter if it's 75 mph speed limit or 65 mph (around here its always 65). In the 55 zones it depends on the traffic. Normally between 55-60 if it is very urban highway. However, if you've ever been in Delaware on the Delaware Turnpike / I-95, there is an enormous disregard for the 55 mph speed limit because it is extremely wide, flat, and the state has no highway cops. So usually I treat it like a 65 mph road like everyone else.
I have a 2011 ECO 6M. At 72 mph (cruise on) I pulled 48.5 mpg between Syracuse and Troy NY on the NYS Thruway(65 mph limit). This was calculated mpg - actual miles driven and actual gallons used.
My normal commuting area is pretty flat with fairly light traffic flow. At over 70 I've topped 50mpg average for 50 miles on the DIC. Calculated for the tank which included some city driving as well was around 43.
I'm the type of driver that's torn between speed and fuel economy. I don't like having a bunch of cars passing me but I love to get >40mpgs.
One thing that does affect FE is the condition the road is in. NYS Thruway = great road. I've never been able to go over 75 on it though, state troopers everywhere.
Vetterin, my Eco also likes 62 mph on cruise. At that RPM (1700 or so, IIRC) the turbo's not spooled, while the engine's putting out as much power as it can without the boost.
...where I can do it safely, I typically aim for 5 MPHbelow the posted maxium speed, and I try to stay in the right-hand "slow" lane whenever possible, leaving the left-hand "fast/passing" lane for the hot rodders and faux-Autobahn wanna-be's.
I had it in my head to keep the RPM's under 2000 from driving my Jeep which is a brick LOL. 65mph in my eco MT is right at 2000rpm. My highway section is mostly flat. Maybe I should try running 70 instead of 65. I don't need to go fast since I leave with plenty of time to get to work but it is easy to get caught up with a-hole drivers. Anyway I'm not sure I would feel safe going much slower than 65 maybe I should run right at 70 the next tank and see if there is much change.
264 and 64 in Hampton Roads area of Virginia is mostly 55 mph, but no one is ever going less the 65. I HAVE to be doing 70 to keep from being run over most of the time. That being said, I rarely et a chance to do any highway driving because I live 5 miles from base and my top speed on the way to work is usually 55 on the road that runs parallel to base. Other than that, all city driving and I have a heavy foot, so I see a 28 mpg average. When I do get to take the highway somewhere, even at 70mph I get up to 42 mpg in my A/T eco. (tuned)
I shoot for 65-67 mph with the cruise set in my ECO M6, that seems to be the sweet spot range for my terrain during my work commute which is mostly all freeway. Depending on the ambient temp, warmer out usually likes 67 as the sweet spot to produce 51-55 mpg on a level straight away while dipping to high 30's climbing grades in 6th letting the cruise do the work. Now that its struggles to get above 40, set at 65 it produces about the same as 67 in 60 degree weather. If i go over 65 now with the 30's we have been having it quickly only sees mid-low 40s on the inst economy. 65 nets me exactly 2k RPM in 6th.
i just move to the right lane and let everyone blow past me, even prius' hahah. although i do look at them smugly as im probably getting better mpg at the moment when they are passing me. But not tree hugger smug, but "yeah my **** is still good old fashioned gasoline only and does just about what that ugly computer mouse looking turd does"
Its tough to keep the speeds down on the toll road just north of toronto. I cruise at 125-130km/hr (roughly 77-80mph) and get blown past regularly. Guess this explains why I'm not getting very good numbers lol.
It depends so much on the region. My former commute here in the SF Bay Area, l had a highway portion and the speed limit was 65 mph. I'd do ~68-74 mph typically. That was roughly going w/the flow of traffic. My (Prius') mileage was a lot better (a tank would be >=50 mpg) if I could keep my speed <70 mph for an entire tank.
I lived in WA state for >9 years and people drive slow there. The speed limits on most of the highways I go on was 60 mph and it wasn't uncommon to have people going at or below the speed limit in the fast lane (hogging it for no reason) w/nobody in front of them in clear, dry weather. They won't move over either.
In So Cal, people drive fast. Years ago, I remember driving on a section of I-5 in the LA area w/a limit of 55 mph. IIRC, was in the 2nd to slowest lane doing 70 mph w/tons of people still zooming by me.
Seems like people in the Sacramento area (not So Cal) drive pretty fast too.
