    Question random misfire at idle

So no one at the shop could figure this out all day. Not to say they cared or tried very much, but it is bugging me so I was keeping an eye on it to see if I can figure it out or learn something.

It's an LTZ with just under 5k miles, all stock. Complaint is a random misfire at idle, especially when cold. We duplicated it as an occasional ignition (type) miss, a big hit / stumble at idle from time to time. There was a general misfire (P0300) set, but the freeze frame shows it set at a higher rpm. After blaming it on bad gas and debating whether to put a new head on it, they are letting it go since "it went away after a hard test drive". Trouble is I checked it and the intermittent big miss at idle is still there. I would really like to learn what caused it, and also would prefer to avoid dissatisfied Cruze customers for the good of the product. I datalogged a few sessions and it seems like it likes to hit on #1, but not consistently. Before we go swapping plug positions and such it's not a clear hit (at this time) on a specific cylinder, and very inconsistent / intermittent.

My question is has anyone come across anything like this and what was the fix, or are you aware of a TSB / PI on this besides the highly unhelpful "gas quality" bulletin and "general misfire diagnosis" document.

I am not even working on the car but I care because it's a Cruze

I will do a cold start misfire graph tomorrow (yes I work this Sunday )

So it has been datalogged, what all does it show when it misses? Even though you say freeze frame on the code was at different rpm, what kind of information do you have on that?

Ask the owner if they drove in heavy rain or washed the engine. Could be something wet under the hood. I am assuming you check the plugs, wires and obvious stuff already. Check the cam sensor(s). I normally ask the customer what the last thing they did before it started and see if that steers you in a direction, of course they almost always lie, which I never understood. Like lying to your doctor . Switch the ignitions parts between #1 and #2 and see if it migrates to #2 cylinder. Check the ground wires and alternator voltage

Thanks for the advice guys! I see a nasty miss on #1 with a cold morning start. My thoughts are ignition (maybe plug) or a clogged injector. But it is assigned to another "tech" so I am only semi involved. I keep on eye on all Cruzeys

Leaking injector? I have had leaking injectors do things like that... Cylinder becomes washed down with all the fuel till the pressure bleeds down, then when the engine is running itll clear up but smooth running values will still be off on that cylinder

I agree. I'm thinking water in the engine. Either from bad gas, power washing the engine, maybe drove through some high water, etc.

Or could just be a crappy plug. My old man used to always tell me, "just cause it's new doesn't mean it's good". I would replace the plugs check the filter for signs of moisture, and go from there. Could be a bad cold pack.

Being mainly coming on #1 cylinder, and turbocharged, you would have to have serious water ingestion. If the intake takes in a little water, by the time it runs through the system, it will be more like water injection or maybe pool in intercooler.

Have you pulled the plugs and checked how they looked yet?

Talking about water on the electronics, not in the intake

Thanks a lot for all the good suggestions. I am done with this car. I hear they are thinking about putting a HEAD on it. Like I said I am not the tech it's assigned to, and around here sometimes things are not done the way I would think is best... Thanks a lot anyway.
