I own a 2013 Cruze LT. I checked out all of the direct competion before I bought. It is more expensive than the competition if you compare apples with apples.

This 3,100 pound compact is about 10 to 12 percent heavier than its direct competion such as the Corolla, Civic, Elantra, Focus, and Mazda 3. In my opinion, this significant "heft" gives it a steadier and quieter ride than the direct competion, making you feel like you're driving a midsize car instead of a compact car - that's great. But, this extra weight reduces gas mileage, without a doubt.

I concur with Consumer Report's mileage test results: about 26 mpg combined city and highway & 40 mpg highway. It's direct competion provides about 3 or 4 miles per gallon better primarily because they are lighter in weight.
