Yesterday I took my Diesel Cruze in for an oil change at 5500 miles. When I went to pick it up today I noticed they were charging me for 10.5 quarts of oil. The service department "determined" this was a clerical error but I did accept that answer SO I checking with the part manager that she did indeed give the oil change person 10.5 quarts to change the oil, which he indeed used all of. They trained half of it out saying it was now ok. I drove out of the lot, the car started shuttering and shaking with black smoke rolling out of it. I turned around and there it now sits.
How bad has this damaged the engine? Where did the 5 quart overfill go? Any thoughts or help would be appreciated!!
Well, obviously they pulled it out of the shop with the overfill so oil was being pumped through the breather system.
They had to drive it back into the shop as well to drain it down.....so it went through two start cycles overfilled.
If the level is now correct (4.75 qts. BTW) fire it up and just let it idle.....thats the only way it can clear the accumulated oil.
Might take a half hour but let it run and leave it be.
Once the idle settles down, a easy drive to a expressway on ramp and hammer it......gonna smoke like no tomorrow but this is the only way the oil will get baked out of the exaust.....right now its in the headpipes and that resonator can under the car....at least it doesn't have a muffler so it should dry out fairly fast.
You may get check engine lights if the various exaust sensors don't clean up fast enouph.....but that'll be the dealers problem.
Can't believe anyone with a ounce of sense would not question that amount of oil in a 2.0 diesel or not......sheeze.

And, as Aussie said, mightly lucky the thing didn't go into a runaway and throw hard parts around.
Very sorry for this! If you need any additional assistance or need us to reach out to the dealership, please reach out to us in a private message. We would be happy to look into this further for you!
Reading stories like this is why I always pop the hood before I ever crank the car to check what was done. I don't even know what I'd do. Worst thing that ever happened to me was dealership techs ragging on my old Magnum SRT-8 just revving it in the garage.. Then when I catch them the service manager tried explaining to me they needed to do that to ensure they got all the oil out (yeah right)... I guess I would rather it be an honest mistake like this though than anything else.. Sure hope it doesn't affect your car negatively in the wrong run. Would definitely keep that service statement in case the engine grenades in the future though.
Thanks to all for the information! You are right? Have used this dealer for 10 years and never a problem until now. I did take it home and the next morning after a ride into town about 50 miles roundtrip, we hear knocking occurring and it sounds like lifters rattling. Two friends who have been diesel mechanic for over 30 years says it could have caused cavination which could lead to burn valves and other damages.
I have taken it back to the dealer for further investigation {No choice since I have to take it back to the dealer where the issue occurred). Will know more on Monday afternoon.
My CTD is due for first service and I'd like to take a copy of the oil change communique to the dealer (if anyone has it). They don't seem to much about the CTD so I'm concerned. The salesman who sold it didn't know what a glow plug was and could not operate the DIC.
I can get it, with the bulletin number for the dealer to pull up Monday 10/27/14 if you need it......the info (without the dire warnings) is also in your owners manual.
I'd like to have the number and dire warnings if it is not too much trouble. I'm also concerned that they use the correct oil. In 2008 this same GM dealer used 10w40 oil in my new Pontiac Vibe which is supposed to use 5w30 (its on the dip stick). Not a big deal but I'd rather do it right.
