    Details

    2 Associated Documents

    Manufacturer: General Motors LLC

    SUMMARY:

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014 Buick Regal, LaCrosse, Verano, and Enclave, and Chevrolet Impala, Malibu, Cruze, and Traverse, and GMC Acadia vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions. In the affected vehicles, the transmission shift cable adjuster may disengage from the transmission shift lever. As such, these vehicles do not conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 102, "Transmission Shift Lever Sequence, Starter Interlock, and Transmission Braking Effect." They also fail to conform to FMVSS number 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention.

    "CONSEQUENCE:

If a vehicle's shift cable disengages from the transmission shift lever, a driver may be unable to shift gear positions and the indicated shift position may not represent the gear position the vehicle is in. Should a disengagement occur while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the driver may be able to shift the lever to the "PARK" position, but the vehicle transmission may not be in the "PARK" gear position. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.

    REMEDY:

General Motors will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace any affected transmission shift cable adjusters, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in late March 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Buick owners at 1-800-521-7300, and GMC owners at 1-800-462-8782. General Motors' number associated with this recall is 14048.

    NOTES:

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236, or go to Home | Safercar -- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

    Good guess ???

The recall bulletin cites nine different 2014 model year GM vehicles affected by this recall. Four are Buicks, four are Chevrolets and one a GMC. The model of especial interest to CruzeTALK readers is the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze with automatic transmission. Please note only a very small number of GM vehicles are thought to need repairs.

I'm going to guess gas since not all the models on the list have diesel options. However, it may cover some diesels as well if the shifter system is the same.

2010 Mit Lancer GT MT (traded for ECO @31K miles)

1990 Pont Transport (traded for Montana @240K miles)
1986 Fiero GT MT (traded for Transport - needed more seats)
1985 Fiero 2M4 MT (traded for Fiero GT @8K miles)

Where do we get most of our CRUZE TSBs from? Do we have a special section or collection?

Where does the adjuster come in if the shift linkage is falling off the transmission lever. For years, GM had a pin on the lever, put the linkage on, a flat washer, and secure it with a cotter pin.

So what are they doing now? Like a snap on to a pin with a ball on it? Snap on, snap off! Typically the detent is within the confines of the transmission, if the linkage falls off, the gear shift lever will flop all over the place. Don't tell me they moved the detent to the gear shift lever.

On my MT, linkage is snap on, feels very tight, can't snap it off with my fingers. Needs lubed once in a while, shifts a lot easier this way.

Neither the Recall Notice (14V092000) issued by NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation and disseminated this morning, Friday March 21 at 7:00 AM nor GM's Noncompliance Notice(Part 573)/FMVSS 102 filed with the U.S. DOT's NHTSA bureau in Washington DC reference specific engine types. Aforementioned stated, it would be prudent and logical to presume all 2014 Chevrolet Cruze automobiles with automatic transmissions built for sale in the United States are included in the current campaign.

Note that GM's Vehicle Safety and Crashworthiness Division estimates the potential total number of units affected to be 355 vehicles across nine different GM models. In plain English, the chance of a particular 2014 Cruze with A/T being affected, regardless of engine type, is exceedingly small.

The relevant correspondence between GM's Safety Office and the NHTSA are public documents and can be accessed and read using the embedded links shown below. I strongly recommend that any party concerned with this particular issue do so and, if after reading the documents questions remain, call the appropriate toll free telephone number provided by GM in the notice.
