starting, the message didn’t go away and the fans still sound like they’re trying to get the car airborne, nor does the temp gauge appear to be moving.

All this is is quite normal. You need to clear the codes with a scanner or by disconnecting your battery for about an hour. This will both clear the code, and get the fan running normally again.
