Honestly.. Buy a Honda.. Unless you are an experienced mechanic. If you are reliant on paying a shop to work on this thing you'll be in the poor house!

Do you have any mechanical ability? Most of that stuff you can do for next to nothing. I would have the trans fluid changed if that is something you do not want to try. I would get some tires and have the front end aligned. Is it a 1.4 or 1.8 engine (or maybe a diesel)?

We have many how-to's that you can look through and see if you are capable of performing.

A little bit. Can change the oil, service clutch, check valves on motorcycle engine. Would not touch the forks though. No experience with cars.

Unless I am mistaken, the engine is 1.6L turbo petrol with 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Seller is keen to service it prior to purchase and we have already discussed the tyres.

From the pictures yeah it does look like a 1.6t. That motor was never sold in North America so this forum might have less info on it vs the 1.4 or 1.8 (Although it is a similar engine to the 1.8). I believe it's the same as the a16let in the Opel Astra J.

The automatic behind a 1.6t is stronger than the base Cruze automatics, but I'd be wary of the fluid coming out burnt. Common 1.8 issues are usually oil cooler seals, thermostats, and the rad fan. 1.6 does use a timing belt and the service for that is 160 000 kilometres.

I assume you are referring to the "Transmission fluid is black" noted by the service.

I understand it's next to impossible to judge from afar, but what would be your take on it dealing any lasting damage?

The car has travelled exactly 1000Km since that service.

I don't know much about transmissions, so take this with a grain of salt, someone else would be better suited to comment in regards to your question. But if it isn't doing anything weird in those 1000km I wouldn't be too worried. Honestly so few people do basic maintenance over here on these cars that the fact it was changed at all is a plus lol.
