I bought My 2012 Cruze in August 2022 with 65,400 miles. After a week of driving it I got the burning plastic smell. The car now has 67,800 miles. I've had $4,000.00 worth of work done to the car, replacing part after part trying to get the burning plastic smell to go away. I've been to 3 different dealerships and 3 different independent shops and none of them can figure out what the issue is. The smell is horrible and makes me sick. There has to be a way to get it to stop.

Inside thru the vent and can smell burning when I get out of the car at home. I had new pads and rotors put on, could it be the calipers? Or an electric short or something? No oil leaks at all. New turbo and converter and water pump and thermostat new pcv valve among other things.

Could be brakes hanging up - that is a pretty bad smell. Feel with the back of your hand when you get out to see if one wheel is hotter than another. If you have an infrared temp gun hanging around the house somewhere, even better.

The oil cooler (filter assembly) is good at hiding an oil leak that can drip down directly on the exhaust.

The interior ductwork, when good and hot enough, can give off sort of a hot plastic smell - at least back when I owned one new.

Burning plastic smell hasn't been as horrible the past couple days. I was thinking maybe one of my calipers was hanging up but my brakes don't seem to get hot. I already did the pads and rotors, but I will replace the calipers just to be sure that isn't the issue. Now to Google how to replace calipers and how to bleed brakes lol.
