2012 non-mylink headunit freezing and misbehaving with ipod connected

Been having issues with my factory non-mylink head unit (Pioneer system) for awhile now, mostly with an ipod connected through USB where the head unit actually controls it. Sometimes when you select search>artist and start scrolling, it can't load the names so all the fields go blank. Pressing back or other functions do nothing. Then it ether changes back to the radio then back to the ipod or doesn't recognize the ipod at all in which case you have to unplug it an plug back in. This can happen several times until you get the artist or album you want. Yesterday I tried to fast forward during a song and it would not stop, even if I changed the radio and back or unplugged the ipod and plugged back in. Pressing pause would pause the music but the clock would still be counting then onto the next song. Finally it stopped by holding skip forward and skip back together. Dealer first updated the software which did nothing, then said the unit had an "internal short " and replaced it along with the input jacks in the console. Still having issues. Tried 3 different ipods of two different generations also. Anyone else have this much trouble with this style factory unit?

Did you have to pay for the updates or was your dealer sympathetic?
As a work around, you might want to put your music on a USB stick.

The reprogram then headunit and connector replacement was all done in early 2014 when the car was under the 3yr/36000mile warranty. Since then they keep telling me it's my ipod which it's not since I've tried 2 different ipods and my android phone.
