Another roadtrip

I drove from (south of) Tucson to Los Banos, CA. This time, I didn't bother filling up the tank to the tippy top before I left. But I can say I drove 805 miles one day and 805 back home the next day. I kept my speed at 80-82 except when crawling through 50 miles of southern California traffic. I also had the AC on the whole way. Total miles driven in two days was 1610, and mileage was 48.2 mpg. Not too shabby for a 3500 lb car.

When going over the Grapevine on Interstate 5, the car was very happy grinding up those long, steep grades in top gear. What kind of car can chug at 1800-2000 rpm over 5% grades without downshifting or really even seeming to strain?

I have yet to witness this car shift down out of top gear on any highway grade.

Nice!
It's always been an amazing long distance driver for me.
Well done Beaurrr! I was wondering if the CTD could do an 800 mile tank, thanks for the confirmation. My best ever tank in the TDI was 669 miles and it was literally on fumes at fill-up. Very cool to learn the CTD exceeds TDI range hands-down.

The extra long range on the CTD will save me additional $$$ by providing more fueling options. Traveling between Arizona and California, diesel prices can vary by up to 30 cents a gallon. Having the ability to make the round trip without fueling in CA will save me hundreds of $$ a year.

It can easily do 800 miles on a tank, if you get it nice and full. Last November, I drove from Tucson to Westley, CA on one tank. That was 818 miles, and my driving was the same (80-82mph, AC on most of the way). BradHerr probably beat us all. I think he got to 1000 miles on a tank. Or damned close.

This time, I topped off in Quartzite, AZ so I could avoid those inflated CA fuel prices you mentioned.

ps. Rivergoer- I noticed your Cruze diesel is white, too. I think that makes two of us in AZ!
1600 miles in 2 days? Why did you make the trip Bandit? Jeeeeeeeezuz, didn't they sell Coors any closer?

Ha ha!
I definitely didn't want to make that trip...I can tell you that much. But at least I didn't feel like I was spending too much on fuel.

The difference between a Gallon of Regular in my California town and at the Arizona ARCO AM-PM:wink: 2 blocks away is $1.79. Diesel follows that same basic algorithm

I'm not sure what you mean.
He means there is about the same % difference in the pricing of diesel between the two areas.

I understand, 2 blocks away is another State and the geographical petroleum pricing is different. Gas that sells for $2.19 is $3.79 in this part of Southern California. Diesel is also priced higher here
