Hi all,
i have just bought 2011 automatic 1.8L cruze and i want to change the oil and filters.
i want to point i live in Colombia , the weather here is always around 26-30 celsius ( 78- 85 fahrenheit).
i have 60K km on my car ( 37k miles).
from what i read many put semi synthetic SAE 5W-30, However i went to the shop and all they had is MOBILE 1 FULL SYNTHETIC SAE 5W-30 oil.
is this oil is good? also is it very important to use the original oil and air filters or not necessary?
thanks

Get a K&N air filter, don't forget the MAF sensor cleaner either!

Fill any synthetic you can find. Some will have benefits over others. For example, AMSOIL's Signature Series will allow you to go 15,000-25,000 *miles* between changes, assuming filter is changed at OEM intervals. Other synthetic oils, just stick to OEM intervals.

It's not important to use the original oil and air filters. There are plenty of aftermarket options that are just as good or better. I prefer Wix for our car's filters.

That's what I use!

Unfortunately, that oil is actually pretty bad for turbocharged engines. The EP formula does a very poor job of preventing deposits in turbo operating conditions. The standard Mobil 1 does better. For the OP, it would be fine since he has a 1.8.

Unfortunately K&N has been demonstrated to be pretty bad at particle filtration.

Both "negative" replies have factual evidence behind them. K&N filters pass 47x more fine dust according to ISO 5011 testing than OEM filters do. They just aren't good filters. They also clog to restriction with only 1/3 the amount of dust that an OEM filter can hold before it becomes restrictive. The oil's deficiencies were proven by AMSOIL's published TEOST 33C, an ASTM standardized test for measuring turbo deposit formation. While the API SN specification allows a maximum of 30mg of deposits to be formed, M1 EP barely passed with 28.2mg of deposits. That's no better than what conventional oils can do. Since that test was made specifically to measure deposit formation in turbocharged engines, the oil is poorly suited for the 1.4L Turbo in our cars.

One thing unique about Cruzetalk is that members who have been recognized as subject matter experts on this board have been assigned a gearhead badge above their avatar. The Gearhead group was created many years ago out of the realization that the internet is overflowing with information but barren of real wisdom and experience. The intent is to set the records straight and prevent the spread of misinformation.

We all have our opinions but those of Gearheads will help you to sort through those you're more apt to trust and those you should verify.

Mobil 1 is a half-decent oil and factory-fill for corvette and Cadillac for well over a decade. I have used it for more than 20 years without problem.

Mobil 1 EP is not. It may be a successful marketing exercise. But it is not a recommended oil.

K&N air filters are absolute garbage filters. But they're supported with some great marketing - so like Mobil 1 EP they sell well. Besides SEMA and other special builds, I know of no OEM usage of K&N air filters. I'm guessing there's a very good reason for that.

The K&N filters are so bad that Dodge issued a service bulletin for their turbo charged diesels. This bulletin instructs dealership service departments to check for non-OEM filters (Dodge couldn't specify K&N for legal reasons) and if found then check the turbo for particulate scarring before doing warranty repairs.

Personally, I'd recommend a Wix oil filter and Amsoil Signature Series 5W-30.

Air filter I'd stick with OEM or equivalent. I used to be a big fan of K&N filters, but had never done a lot of research. Did more research and found out that they're generally considered to be absolutely terrible.
