Blinkers hyperflashing

11179 Views 21 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Blasirl
Hi, hopefully this is in the right spot. I have a 2011 JH SRI Holden Cruze, a while ago I got a new trailer with LEDs, whenever I connected the trailer the blinkers would flash 6 times very fast when I tapped the indicator stalk. When I unplugged the trailer the car indicators went back to normal, then one day after I'd unplugged the trailer the car indicators kept hyper flashing, and has done ever since. The globes in the car are not LEDs, they are originals. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Nathan

Welcome to the forum!

Are any of the bulbs broken or burnt out? I know blinkers will blink super fast to indicate that one isn't working properly. Not sure if that's what you're talking about or not.
I think this should be moved to Gen1.

Typically hyperflashing is because a bulb is burned out. You might verify that all the lights are working.

It's possible that you might have hyperflashing if the system is overloaded (too many lights). You might check your trailer system to see if is has resistors. If it does, I'd remove them.

Hi, Thanks for the replies, no bulbs are blown (I'll double check again anyway). I haven't added any extra lights, just the trailer would make it flash faster, until I unplugged the trailer, then it would return to normal, until one day it didnt.
And I apologize, I think this is meant to be in Gen1
Moved to Gen1, sorry it took so long.
You say the trailer has LEDs so yes you do need load resistors for them.

I disagree. The trailer is in addition to the lights in the car. Since the hyper flash only happened when the trailer was attached, I have to think the trailer was overloading since it's impossible for a added load to "under load".
When I installed a trailer hitch, I used one of these devices. It T's into the car's brake lights and converts it so it plugs into the trailer lights. Not sure if OP used one of these or not. Also not sure if this is relevant in any way. Hope this helps.

I still dont understand why it still hyperflashes even after the trailer has been removed, and has been doing for a few months now without the trailer being connected. I havent added any other wiring such as the above mentioned.

Thanks again
Nathan
I had this problem with my son's car and it turned out to be the "multi-function switch". Does it stop doing it when you turn on the turn signal hit the turn signal stalk or turn on the hazard lights? Since cars don't have individual turn signal flashers in the fuse block anymore, somehow the trailer/ LED lights may have blown out the flasher assembly in the multi-function switch. this switch is the combination turn signal/wiper assembly switch on the on the steering column. https://www.superbrightleds.com/blog/led-turn-signals-blinking-too-fast-hyperflashing/275/ As far as after you unplug the trailer? Unless it affected the turn signal switch.

It does it all the time, however it flashes normal speed when the hazards are on. And what did you mean by the multi function switch? the actual stalk?

Valid for "conventional" cars, but I don't think it applies to the Cruze. The Cruze has no flashers. That's all done by the BCM. The controls tell the BCM what you want to do.

OP, does the hyperflash happen for both left and right or just one direction? If just one direction, recheck the turn signal with as many lights on as you can. See if it works normally and has normal brightness. I'm thinking you might have a bad ground (perhaps caused by modifying the wiring for the trailer), or you have a old bulb that isn't drawing as much current as it should and confusing the BCM.

The last idea is that the trailer has somehow damaged the BCM ($$). But before that, I'd try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes to try and reset it.

The multi function switch is the combination of turn signal and windshield wipers switches on the steering column. My son's car that had this problem is a 2005 Chevy Classic/Malibu. I am not sure what the Cruze has.

Check the flasher relay, u may not have individual fuses anymore but even the 2017 Cruze has a flasher relay. Mine was under the dash right below the steering column on the left side.

I hate to say but the BCM was likely overloaded and damaged, the lights are all monitored for current draw, this involves a small value resistor inside the BCM port that drives the lamp, the resistor is in series with the lamp and the overload probably burned this load sense resistor which may be causing a false reading of lamp load which the BCM is using to set the flash rate, only hope is the disconnect reset IMO, also do not short the battery terminals together, this might damage the on-star backup battery

I don't know about the 2017, but my memory of the 2013 schematic shows all the bulbs are driven directly by the BCM. The stalk just feeds commands to it. The clicking noise is created by the radio on commands found on the car's data bus. One way this becomes obvious is when using the 4-way flasher. With the car running, turn on the hazards. Now, turn off the car and open the door, killing the radio. What happens to the click? On my car, it disappears.

A 2005 is probably closer to a 1970's car in the way the lights are wired. If it's the kind of car where the brake lights do double-duty as a turn signal, then the stalk has to disconnect the brake line on that side to change the brake light to a turn signal. Lots of switch contacts. If that switch fails to connect, the lights don't work right and you can get hyperflashing.

I hate to say but the BCM was likely overloaded and damaged,
That's my fear as well. But might as well try the cheap things first. I do seem to remember having a old bulb that didn't draw the right current and causing flashing problems. Bulbs are cheap, so it's worth a shot.

Good point mine is a 2012 so that's probably y mine still has the relay, and I'm not too familiar with the newer ones as I like my car so haven't thought about looking into a new one. But I think one of the service techs at chevy told me the 17 had a flasher relay, I may be wrong could have been a diff car he was talking about but since we were on the subject of the Cruze I may have just connected them together.

Hi again all, yeah it hyperflashes for both directions, the tow pack was installed by holden and was working fine for ages, even with the current trailer which I'd used dozens of times before, when I get a chance I'll go through all the bulbs just in case, the car is parked at the moment due to a stupid coolant leak, can't win sometimes lol.

Thanks to everyone for the replies and discussion.

I should have also added that when I tap on the indicator stalk to change lanes or whatever that it flashes 6 times rapidly instead of the 3 normal paced flashes

That sounds like what I was referring to: The actual turn signal assembly(in the column) not functioning correctly. May be the switch was over loaded by the trailer leds?
