No. Your issue is more likely an improperly installed valve cover gasket or timing cover gasket.

Did the mechanic clean the old oily mess up?

Believe me, if you don't take the initiative with the repairs the shops will take you for a ride. I see it here almost every day.

Unfortunately, I have worked with "mostly honest" technicians and service advisors in the past.

The dishonest ones don't last long in most shops. Sadly, the "mostly honest" ones normally get promoted because they know how to "SELL".
