Car Won't Start

2346 Views 9 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  ReaganMitch
Hi, so my mom was driving my car last Saturday and it cut off on her without warning. My key was stuck in the engine and I was able to get towed home. Well, I went and got a new battery and installed it, went to crank it and it sounded as if it was going to start but it didn't and then I got some message about opening and closing the window. What is happening? I need help quick!

Can you be more descriptive? Did the car crank at normal speed but just not catch? Or was it cranking slowly - as if the battery was dying?

and then I got some message about opening and closing the window.
That's normal when the battery has been disconnected. Don't worry about it.
Okay, since I have reconnected the battery, I turn the key in the startup position to crank it and it makes the sound as if it is going to crank, but it sounds like it's stalling and never cranks so it shuts back off. When it shut off, you can hear like a ticking noise from the engine for like 2 minutes if not less.
You either have the wrong or a poor quality battery - or it requires a charge.

Your negative ground cable also may need to be changed.
So, you don't think I need a starter or ECM?
I would start by checking the battery with a good dynamic tester. It's possible the new battery has a bad cell.
Batteries and battery ground cable has been problematic in the Cruze. Starter and ECM seem to be pretty solid.

A brand-new battery may not have a good charge on it.
Any luck? Auto parts stores test batteries for free if I'm not mistaken.

Many of them do, but many of them aren't equipped to do a dynamic load test on the battery. I've lost count of the number of "my local auto parts store tested my battery and said it's good" and the final corrective action ends up being "I replaced the battery."

Car Won't Start Update

Well, turns out there was more damage to the car than I thought. There was water shooting from the reservoir, so I would have had to replace my head gasket as well as there was internal damage to the engine which was too costly for me and on top of that and I needed to replace the water hose. So I ended up getting a new car. Thank You guys for all your help and responses.
