It does not calculate based on the type of oil, but if it says "change oil soon" you're at least at 10,000 miles on that oil and definitely need it changed, synthetic or not the filter is going to be clogged completely soon and not properly doing it's job. These cars are very sensitive to the type of oil used (if it's the turbo model) and synthetic is better for it, so midas wasn't wrong, but it was definitely too expensive.

The car has no clue what oil you put in it at all. It's based off miles and driving conditions if you were using the semi synthetic dealer oil. Unknowing what oil is in the car, I wouldn't go too far past 7000 on the synthetic. What year is your Cruze and has it had a ECU Recall done? That can change when the Oil Change message comes up.
As for Mobil 1, if you insist on that brand just use the original silver top and skip the extended protection. Still 7000-8000 recommendation for the silver top. Quite a few of us is using AMSOIL Signature Series and run it for 10,000-14,000 miles (after used oil analysis is taken). I had an oil change in January and have my next one scheduled middle of the month. If I kept using Mobil 1, I would have been 3 changes in by now.

Depending on the way the car is driven, it'll depend how long it takes for the light to come back on. It doesn't know any difference based on what type of oil you use. If it's driven a lot and you prefer less oil changes, Amsoil Super Synthetic oil is the only oil that's actually good to run out to 15,000 miles. Mobil 1 advertises it can go for about as long, but by then it's fairly degraded and not really keeping things clean anymore when Amsoil still is and isn't worn out yet.Thanks for all the quick replies guys. What Anthony was saying pretty much. Short trips and letting the car idle for 2 hours to warm up because it takes forever causes that oil life monitor to be short. My mom's 2016 Acadia barely made it 4000 miles before it was at 0% I believe my car was at about 8% when it started warning me to change it. That was about 9 months from the last change already. With Amsoil SS we usually swap filters out at 6k miles since it's up top and only requires a wrench. I can do it in about 6 mins not spilling it, I usually just break it loose and go look for blue shop towels and a flat head to remove the old o ring.

As stated above, the oil change reminder, assuming the reprogram was done, as well as all subsequent models, will (should) alert at a maximum of 7500 miles.
The alert is based off number of restarts, run time between starts (looking at operating temperature and for how long at that temperature), ambient cold start temperature, overall miles traveled and various other variables.
The earlier Cruze (and other GM) prior to the update, had a 10,000 mile upper limit........this was shortened because GM was seeing engine failures related to extended oil changes......the interval that they had set the system up for.
Regardless of oil used it should be changed on a annual basis regardless of mileage.
Lots of short trips will push lots of moisture into the crankcase.
Long trips load oil with blow by gasses, which, since are a result of combustion, are carbon based......this is why oil turns black....it is keeping carbon and other contaminates in suspension resulting from burning a hydrocarbon.
Synthetics are more tolerant of this and this is part of the reason they can survive higher mileage.
My driving is easily 95% short trip and I'm showing 10% life remaining around 3500 miles.......I only use M-1 EXT, and it gets changed at 4000 miles......about ten months for this car.
For me, the benefit outweighs the expense.....specifically, a synthetic reduces starter/battery load during cold weather starting, it is faster lubrication to cam bearing area, and more tolerant of turbocharger heat at the shaft bearings.
Likely, the engine will do just fine with semi-syns but the cost difference is too close, so I consider it a wash.
Anyways, during warranty, annual changes not exceeding 7500 miles are all the car is looking for.......you choose the oil and as long as it has a dexos certification, you are golden.
Beyond that, you can experiment all you want.....it is your engine.
