Hi,
I have a Chevrolet Cruze 2010 Auto (LS, J300)...

On the gear stick area, it has the likes of "P", "R" "N" "D". Are these supposed to light up?

I've tried turning the headlights on and off but they never light up, yet they look as if they should.

Should they light up or not?

Yes they should light up with the lights. You should also get a letter or number if you use manual mode in the DIC bottom LHS of the screen.

I know there's an indicator to the gear in the DIC, but I didn't think there were lights on the shifter or base around it.

I can only go by my 2012 CDX diesel and it has the letters backlit and also the traction control and window switches. It is midnight here and I went out and checked just now. The steering wheel controls are backlight as well.

The shifter is backlit, at the same level as the stereo buttons. If its not working I would check to see if there is a replaceable bulb, my previous car a 2004 cavalier had the bulb burn out by 60K.
