Cruze diesel flex plate

2017 Chevy Cruze diesel, after dealership said engine was trashed,went another shop,flex plate was broken, affecting the crankshaft position sensor, anyway had it fixed, is this a common problem?

Definitely not one that we've seen here with the diesel, and a quick Google search didn't return anything in the way of the 9T50 either. The 1.6 diesel is great at killing a manual dual-mass flywheel, though.

Ford's dealt with cracked flex plates on 2.0 Ecoboosts with their 8 speed (jointly developed with GM's 9Txx), but I haven't seen much of them in GM cars since the 4Txx went away.
When the mechanic pulled out the crank sensor and saw it was damaged by the reluctor ring why would they say the engine needed to be replaced for $7000.

They lock up and start knocking/shaking.
