You are seeing the results of a very oversized radiator for the displacement it must cool.
Most system return hoses will be warmish.....the only time the Cruze hose is warmish is mid summer, hot days, A/C on.
During Chicago winters, I think the heater core does more than the radiator......others will agree.
Regardless, your Cruze is OK.
Regarding that overheat code from last year......for whatever reason, the sensor (not the sender) got some gremlin that evidently was a one time shot.......as you said, hopefully a one time occurence.
