Factory head unit delete after double din install?

Hello! This is my first post on this forum.

I have been reading this forum for the past month or so now (ever since I got my used Cruze), and everything has been very helpful!
I've read the posts about the double din conversion, and have my parts coming in tomorrow (Alpine ILX-007, GMOS, etc etc). I just have one remaining question that I have yet to find an answer to yet on this forum. After installing the double din, is there a way to replace the factory screen? Perhaps turn it into a storage compartment or something. If not, that's fine, I just don't want to be looking at two screens. At the bare minimum I would like to remove it and place just a rounded fitting plastic piece in there just to make the new ILX look more factory.

Any ideas, suggestions or past experiences are appreciated.
Thanks for all your help!

What kind of screen do you have? The "green screen" or the color one? I think you'll find that your new system may not replace all the functions of your old screen.

I have the green screen. From what I understand, I won't be able to change the settings on the vehicle. That is fine by me as they are set to how I like them. If that's all there is to it, I would rather the screen just disappear.
Are you a Cruze with buttons on the right of the steering wheel for volume and phone?
Yeah; CC on the left and volume/handsfree on the right.

Good, from what I gathered you get to still control some of the features of the car with those buttons if the radio kit supplies the hook ups. The green screen usually stays unless you go tablet route.

Going tablet route would get rid of the screen? Is there a known way to get rid of the green screen anyway?
Tablet route would just move it up here.

You need the screen in the event battery disconnects and or symptoms of the neg cable campaign if you didn't already have this. My pref is no doors unlock when car us turned off(or when put in park for you auto folks)

Hmm so the screen is imperative? I might just find a way to cover it up or something. I really don't want to be looking at two screens lol

Atrocious!
Reason I skipped all that and went MyLink. Looking back, I wish I was able to hold out till 2014 when MyLink was more stable and refined.
So you guys want to get your hands dirty . Here we go then . We will need to find a team of programers and decipher the data signals .. with these itegration units all that is achieved is a simple signal translated to the HU so the HU can be operated with the steering wheel buttons wee ..

You guys really need to look into another direction and write the software required to recieve the data signals for full functionality of all of the signals like temperature controls and othe functions of the BCM ..yeah tricky .well these guys over on the Mustang forum are doing iT and achieving far greater than I thought possible considering I have Factory Nav , XM and cell plus Temp on an 8 inch touch scrren that powers 8 speakers digitally ..

It would be in the programing and wiring that have to be managed ..I had to get with some serius techs whom do alot of hands on with hardware to get a better idea of what is necesary to send and recieve these signals .

Also we haave to have these sourced into the electronic components from the factory Security Coding because of theft of such products by the black market profiteers . OH well live and learn ..

Not sure anyone would at this time but may happen in the future. I know in the Mazda 6 arena you can have custom messages in the display replacing the hello screen.

Was this done with the GMOS-044 interface? Right now I have a 2013 Cruze LT I got last year and I'm looking to do an install of a double DIN reciever but I also wanted to wanted to either keep the monochrome screen functional or remove it and put something that would make it look like nothing was missing. I also want to keep the 3.5mm jack in the console and USB port still functional if possible but I bet I can make that work without a kit solution.
You can buy one of those chinese made android stereos, that look like mylink (until its on). It completely replaces the buttons and green screen is no more, vehicle controls are still kept within the new stereo itself. just ebay search "cruze android stereo" and it'll be a screen along with buttons under it. That's the only way to get rid of the green screen and still maintain all functionality.
