Going for 1,000 mile tank

As some of you may know, I have had several 900+ mile tanks over the last few months. I am flirting with the 1000 mile tank and figured I would start logging my stats.

I will add more details as to tricks and techniques as I have time.

I have 18 gallons of useable fuel onboard, so 55.6 mpg average will be required. (I will not entertain fuel capacity arguments)

Currently I can maintain 56+ mpg for 700+ miles on my weekly commute. The weekend errands have been what has kept me from the 1000 mile tank. I started this week with a 230 mile head start as I filled up in Ohio on the way back from Lordstown.

How far are the diesels going when the distance to e goes to "LOW"?

I've gone about 100 miles, but I was driving like 62 MPH and averaging in the mid 50's. I was still sweating it lol
These guys with deletes doing 1000/tank, what kind of speeds are they running to get those results?

BradHerr is running stock. In fact, most, if not all of us posting with the Gold HyperCruzer badges are running basically stock engines - maybe non-OEM spark plugs and an air filter change, but other than that the drivetrain is stock. Some of the Silver HyperCruzers are running with aftermarket performance tunes. Bottom line is GM was very, very conservative with the Cruze's fuel economy numbers in the US. For Canada we use the US numbers because it's the same car, drive train, and transmission.

I do 59 mph on the highway and 72 mph on the interstate. Always use cruise control.

I am going 60-80 miles after the light comes on. I believe I've gone close to 100 miles, but I don't have any data to back that up. It seems like I went 100 miles one time but I haven't gotten close to that in a while. I am not sure if I just remembered it wrong or what.

Which modifications have you made to the car to sustain 900+ miles on a tank?
The biggest factors have been topping the fuel tank off. I always fill the tank until there is visible fuel in the neck. Then I run the tank 60-80 miles after the low fuel light on. I consistently use/fill +17.5 gallons. With that capacity it only requires a 51 mpg average to get a 900 mile tank.

To get the 56 mpg average, I have the "race" tune loaded in the computer.

so, you're actually doing "better" with the race tune ?? How's the performance with that tune. Is it visibly noticeable on the butt dyno? Can ypu light em up with TC off??
PFFT and I thought I was good going 550 miles on a tank in my gasser cruze LOL, it's good for ME cuz I'm a hardcore leadfoot and speeder lmao.

Great job on the 1000 miles!!

It is quite a bit stronger throughout the rpm range, but I don't know if I could bring myself to pushing the pedal down near the floor! Think of what that would do to my mileage!

It will spin the tires pretty hard now, though. I have noticed a 7-10 mpg increase with the race tune and economy driving. I had it dyno'd before and after the tune and delete. There was 25 hp gain and 35 ft lb of torque increase. This was with one of the first tunes they put out and there were definitely some issues that have been resolved since. The car hasn't been dyno'd with the latest tune.

Are you aware of anyone who's done the larger injectors and turbo too? I know their shop car has those. Seems to me that a delete, tune, injectors and turbo would make the car a beast . I am only 2 hours from them, so a trip may be in order.

Just their shop car. I am a huge fan of oversized injectors and believe they will provide a substantial increase in fuel mileage.

A few of us have gone over 900 miles bone stock.. use the cruise and try to stay between 60 - 65 mph.. I noticed my mileage dropping a bit .. Checked the car over and found the under body tray is broken in spots and hanging down.. Getting it replaced and hope to see the mileage numbers go back up.. I hope to join the 1000 mile club . I'd love to do the delete but I don't think the car will pass our ( Ontario ) clean air standards without all the "clean " stuff

Did it!!! 1,000.2 miles, one tank. Bone stock 2014 CTD. 54.0 MPG hand calculated.

About crapped my pants the last 50 miles, thought it was gonna be Hyperfail and call AAA. But I trusted you guys and ran 92 miles after the Low Fuel light came on. I must've been running on what was left in the fuel filter because it took 18.5 gal to top back up to the brim.

Thanks much to BradHerr for providing the inspiration and knowledge!

Great job! The club just doubled in size! Those last 100 miles are very nerve racking.

How many gallons did your "gallons used" page show? How did the last shown distance to empty coincide with the miles driven after "low" was displayed?

LOL, I'm still so new with this car (got it in April) that I wasn't aware of the "gallons used" function until I was re-reading this Thread today, so I failed to reset it before the trip. From now on that will be part of my Trip reset routine.

The DTE was showing that I wouldn't make 1,000 miles before the "Low" displayed. It was flirting around 990 to 996 but I was also doing a gradual climb out of the Palm Springs, CA area. Once I got over the 'hump' and headed down into the Los Angeles basin it was hypercruze city. MPGs were pegged on 99 most of the last 40-50 miles. That was my goal, try to get it over the hill and let gravity assist.

Also had a fortunate tailwind (35-40 mph) on the first 150 mile leg, ran 250 miles without even moving the needle off Full.

What really helped me was reading several posts that indicated you can go about 80-100 miles after the low fuel light. I had to really trust that because the fuel gauge was pegged on E for the last 60 miles. Figured worst case I'd call Auto Club for a tow and request a HyperFailure badge from Obermd LOL.
