They're in the insurance yards now. And one of them still has a functioning odometer. (not surprising that they're DOA considering the pics I saw of lots full of cars sitting in 3' of water)

Perhaps we should keep a list of VINs for future reference.

Good Call. These will eventually make it around to unwary buyers. If we get enough input, you can have a decent listing set up.

From what I've read, not likely. If the cars were insured, then it will show up in a Carfax report.

The ones you have to worry about are the ones that are not insured, so there was no insurance claim, and sold by owner in a private sale. There's nothing for Carfax to pick up on. The buyer can clean it up and resell it with a clean report.

I wouldn't rely heavily on Carfax, but anything that makes it into the national flood car database should be on the Carfax report too.

But now that the hurricane cars are hitting the auction yards, I'm not buying anything with the slightest potential of being a coastal flood car for the rest of the year.

I bought a totaled Mercedes with clean title from State Farm Insurance via a salvage auction, it has a clean Carfax. Either their database isn't perfectly complete, or it doesn't pick up cars that were totaled in nonflood comprehensive claims, like car/deer accidents.

Looking at those pictures, I wonder how high the water got inside. The carpet looks pretty good.

In general, glad I'm not looking for a new/used car anytime soon.
