I can't say what happened to that car.

But when I was a mechanic. I had a customer bring his pickup on a tow truck. For diagnosis. I installed a brand new crate motor.

62k miles and never had an oil change. It had the original oil it was sold with. And when I pulled the pan. The oil looked like tar.

My first thought was the very last sentence in the article...pissed off Ex combined with Jell-O and very bad intentions.

I suspect the used engine had issues to begin with, and perhaps some other issues going on.. this is way out there. I would have thought the ECU would shut the engine down long before seizure if it showed low oil pressure or excessive heat? I had a friend with a car that had the oil filter not properly installed by a quick lube place, and it lost all oil, on the highway, but the ECU shut it down fast enough that it didn't destroy the engine. That was a late 90's GM mini-van, I can't believe the modern Cruze doesn't have similar or better ECU programming to protect the engine.
