Was introduced to these brand new RCA connectors back in the 40's, had an upright Philco radio and found a 78 rpm phonograph turntable with one of these RCA plugs in it. Got a jack, drilled a hole in the back of the chassis and ran a capacitor to the grid of the first audio amplifier tube. But that wasn't good, still getting static from the AM, so added a SPDT switch for the radio or the phono inputs.
Really became popular with component stereo in the 50's. Still have some pro stuff using that really old 1/4" connector, far superior for connectivity. Jacks have a switch in them that switches over so don't need that extra switch. But now doing this with a 3.5 mm jack.
So what else is new, LOL.
