How-To: Check Diesel Intake Clamps

Rationale: Many of the emissions sensor failures that occur on the Cruze Diesel are speculated to be traced back to un-metered air entering the intake system. One source for this un-metered air could be if any of the 5 hose clamps between the air filter and the turbo inlet are under-tightened. Use the following procedure to locate and check the tightness of these intake clamps:

Procedure:

2. Locate the hose and clamps to be checked - indicated by the circled area in the picture below:

3. Use a flat-head screwdriver or 7mm nut-driver to firmly turn the screws on the clamp clockwise. The location of the 5 clamp screws is indicated in the photo below:

If they move more than 1/8 to 1/4 of a turn, they are loose. If a clamp is lose enough that the duct is able to twist or shift, ensure that the duct is securely positioned before tightening the clamps. Tighten all 5 clamps as firmly as possible. After 3000-5000 miles re-check the clamps to see if they have backed off in that time. If they have backed off, it may be necessary to use blue thread-locker (http://www.amazon.com/Permatex-2401...1451592026&sr=1-3&keywords=blue+thread-locker) or a similar solution to prevent them from loosening over time.

Does anyone know if GM has specified a torque value for tightening these clamps?

I'll check my ECO MT when it warms up. I think we have the same clamps but the car is less sensitive to un-metered air flow. Excellent write up - short and to the point.
You didn't mention the ones on the other side of the turbo.

These are the set that have the known issue with being loose, so this quick How To focuses on that. I've never actually seen any further clamps of this style post-turbo, unless they are down by the intercooler where you'd have to take off the bumper to get at them.

I'm not sure exactly where it was in the intercooler piping system, but I had a connection come loose while accelerating from a stop light when my car had ~20k miles. Could be related to loose clamps. Had it towed in under warranty and it was a quick fix, unfortunately I did not get any details of the cause other than intercooler hose came loose or something of that sort. Car ran but had no power and a strong exhaust smell inside the cabin.

Have you checked your clamps since then?
I have not, but that is probably a good idea. I know the ones on top were tight when I changed my air filter a few weeks ago.

4 of the 5 clamps took between 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn EACH!!! Thanks for posting this tip!!!

Wow, just checked mine (66K miles)...4 of 5 clamps took 1 1/2 to 2 full turns. The one closest to the turbo only took 1/8 turn.

Thanks Rev for the write-up and thanks also to Lugnut for the reminder today...I originally read this while my car was stuck waiting for a timing belt/water pump and forgot to check when I got it back.
Ended up snapping off 2 of the clamps when tightening last weekend. Managed to pick up new ones pretty easily at the Fleet-Farm store, but I had to make 2 trips, because Ifound out in the process that 1 of the clamps requires a 5", while the other 4 use a 4".
