...and, gasoline engines don't require purchase of special de-smoking fluid, which is an additional cost factor to remember.
Urea = desmoking fluid required on some newer diesels. I think the urea is injected into the exhaust.

AdBlue is the registered trademark for AUS32 (Aqueous Urea Solution 32.5%) and is used in a process called selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to reduce emissions of oxides of nitrogen from the exhaust of diesel engined motor vehicles.

Oil changes and filters cost more on a diesel. Fuel filters, oil filters are serious $$$$$ on a diesel!

And when you get one drop of diesel on your carpet or shoes, stinky.

But, given all the hassles, I loved my VW diesel. I did a 100 mile commute and it was such a sweet ride. :D

That's now true at all.

A friend of mine just ordered Amsoil and an oil filter in his 2009 Golf TDI and it was like $60 delivered and he can go a whopping 10,000 miles on that. That's CHEAP! I have a co-worker spending like double that on his car at Jiffy Lube to go the same distance in a gas vehicle.

The part about stinky fuel... ugh, yes... that stinks. When at the pump it's best to use a paper towel every time you handle the fuel pump handle.

That vehicle is nice and has a lot of low end torque. Very fun to drive with the 6 speed. Not as comfortable for me to get in and out of as the Cruze.

You're using the OLM or 10k on the odometer? Have you tested your oil and checked for wear?
20 dollar oil? lol is it even SAE oil? Also you might wanna get an oil analysis done. I do 3-4K intervals on full synthetic filter+oil change. But I also like trips to the track.

My OLM estimate 10 k for 0% left on my oil life.

That is such a sweet deal I'm jealous :( I'm paying 3x as much for each of my oil changes.

^ I dont envy you on that point I don't let anyone wash my cars. Just personal preference. But still 20 bucks is awesome lol
theres a big price difference where you buy your oil and how much oil you get. usually the bigger the container the cheaper it will be compared to buy several smaller containers. so places that get them by the drum can usually sell it at a far cheaper rate. which would explain why theres a price difference in how much it cost people here to get an oil change done.

The dealer gives a great deal so that I get to know them for future service.
Thanks for the pics. I have a 24mm socket from when we had our 03 Sunfire with the ecotec so I'm glad I kept it. I'll be doing our first change at 500 miles, than again at 1,000 and then per the oil life monitor on the display. We'll see how it goes.

thanks much for the pix and info. this helps a lot!
For those of you doing your own oil changes, are you using the new DEXOS 1 approved oil?
Dexos 1 & 2...

I'm glad I came here. I have been looking at buying a Cruze and am trying to get properly educated before making a decision. This thread brought up "requirement" for Dexos oil in the 1.4L engine. I've been using full synthetic in all of my 4 stroke engines since the late '70s and have never had an engine problem. I run my cars for ten years or more. My '03 Protege5 uses NO oil between the 10,000 mile oil change intervals. My '97 Civic uses a quart every 5,000 miles. I follow oil technology issues at www.bobistheoilguy.com and there are some interesting threads regarding Dexos oil. I have not read all of them yet, but it appears that the primary purpose for Dexos is milage, not long life. I will be looking into this issue more. If you are interested, I'd suggest spending some time at the above web site also.

...not really, as Dexos1™ calls for an "ashless" combustion oil, which is almost manditory with a turbo being mounted directly in the exhaust manifold, because when dino oil burns to carbon it can clog & kill hot turbo bearings.

...you *are* aware that Dexos1™ is itself only a "oil test specification" and not an actual product (oil) itself? This difference is *how* GM is side-stepping the Magnuson-Moss Law requirements.
I saw that it was a spec., but also thought it was a GM product. I saw also that it was most likely a full synthetic, hence the ashless attribute. I'd say it is too early to say what it is all about. Does the factory warranty specify that Dexos 1 oil has to be used in the engine? Thanks.
