You can do it from the outside, I know a few people that have a few times along with me and my girlfriends Cruzes. But after at least ten times of doing it to mine I broke the clip, so I had to glue the clip back in place and gently pop it back in hoping it would hold. Thankfully it has held for a few months, but I'm afraid to touch it or pop another one out from the outside.
So yes you can pop it out from the outside, but at a risk.
