K&N not recommended by chevy!

25638 Views 70 Replies 41 Participants Last post by  carbon419
ive talked to chevy service department, he said they do not recommend k&n products because of the oil in it, i had one in 5 diff. vehicles and never had a problem. K&N says it will not hurt a chevy and stand behind there warranty policy. So my question is why does chevy seem so against K&N or any oil based filters, or air intake product. I also asked if they recommended air intake systems and they said they did but it was the ones made by GM , but they dont make anything for the cruze! So whats your thoughts?

A dealer recommending its own parts? Sounds about right to me.

Well I have noticed that people tend to over oil and that excell will get pulled in with the air. I'm sure that isn't good. Sooooooooooooo, you should be fine with one, but don't over oil.
just get a dry filter..

I wouldn't ever use a K&N filter. I like my filter to actually FILTER the air that's going into my engine. K&N filters have much, much worse filtration a traditional paper filter.

a filter is a filter. is stops debris from entering your engine. like bugs and other crap that might get sucked in. they both do the same job of filtering air, one flows better then the other. if you think the difference of filtering out microscopic stuff is really a big deal then stick with a cheap paper filter. Ive run intakes with kn, or kn style filters for over ten years on every single vehicle Ive owned and never once have a i had a issue at all. it a matter of preference thats it. been talked about on boards as long as Ive been online

Two reasons why GM doesn't like the K&N...

1. Because they're known for coming over-oiled, and they're known for getting that oil sucked into the MAF sensor, and causing it to have to be replaced.

2. Because GM is on the hook for the warranty for 100k miles, and the K&N filter lets ~100 TIMES as much dirt through as the AC Delco filter does... Believe it or not, dirt/dust does add wear to turbos, valves, rings, cylinder walls, and everything that the oil touches... Speaking of oil, the OLM then becomes "optimistic" when the oil gets bunches of dirt in it to plug the filter, as well as wear on the engine, if it's small enough that the filter won't catch it...

Yeah, for most people, they won't see extra wear and such, but if you drive on gravel roads a lot, or in dusty environments, there will be a shortened engine lifespan resulting from the extra dirt getting through...

I suspected that they didn't filter as well myself. The engine gets more air seems logical to me there has to be more dirt passing through also. That's why I didn't convert to the K&N filter. If I needed more power I would have purchased a different car.

i'm just not a fan of oil based filters.. i would like to try out a dry AEM sometime though.
I have been using oiled filters for 25 years with no problems. The manufactures like to blame them for dirty MAF’s. Those can be cleaned no problem, but the hot wire/film MAF’s can die from oil on them. As far as intakes, they don’t do much for many of the modern cars on the road today especially if it is a MAF airflow set up. If the ECU will not adapt they don’t do anything and on many cars today, the ECU will tune out what you do.
When i had my Stang, my car kept shutting down because of the oil caused the MAF sensor to go nuts. The dealer didn't cover that under warranty. That is why i also stay away from K&N.
Ran K&Ns on just about all my vehicles. Never had a problem
The "correct" answer really depends on your driving environment. I personally saw the intake tract of Duramax engine pickups (stock and K&N) that ran the GM air filter test in Arizona. Huge difference in how much superfine matl gets in there.

OTOH I knew a guy who ran a 283 Chevy in Cleveland Oh for 100,000 miles with NO air cleaner at all, and it ran fine. That's an environment with a lot of rain/snow, little dust, and he ran 100% on paved roads.
Oh man here we go again
LOL, I'm staying out of it....

1. Of course Chevy would not recommend the K&N product. They want you to purchase a GM replacement filter.
2. I too have had a K&N drop in filter in multiple cars. My '92 Saturn SC is still running with no engine problems and it has had a K&N air filter installed since the first year. Oil consumption is what it was when it was new. My '97 Civic has had a K&N drop in filter installed since I purchased it. It uses a quart of oil in 5,000 miles and the oil and oil filter gets changed every 10,000 miles. My '03 Mazda Protege5 has also had one since new. It uses no oil between 10,000 mile oil changes. None of these engines have had any MAF issues, nor any engine issues at all. I guess these cars are just burning up all the debris that flows past the air filter.

If GM tells you in writing the K&N will void the warranty, then I might not put one in a Cruze. Otherwise, I'd put one in my Cruze.
GM and their service departments don't recommend the K&N filters because they are a bunch of retards. No offense to retards.
@SpaceMe +1

GM doesn't recommend any performance parts these days, heck, from my experience they don't recommend anything that they're not specifically supplying for your car.
