Hello all and thanks for your posts, I lurked here reading about the diesel Cruze prior to my purchase. I have been leary of late model vehicles in general, especially diesels burdened with complex emissions systems, but I decided to go for it as the car seemed like a good fit otherwise. I found my ideal version of the CTD...but it was across the country, in for a penny, in for a pound right? Convinced the wife to make a vacation out of it, flew from Buffalo NY to Seattle WA and the deal was done. I am very excited, less than the first day excitement, but still cautiously happy with the purchase. It is a beautiful white manual hatch with the RS package and Kalahari leather interior. The first 2 days were wonderful, so happy with the car and the drive. From the time we left the dealer a curious notice was intermittently showing on the infotainment screen at shutdown and start-up about servicing the rear camera, but the camera was working just fine so I didn't care.
We picked the car up on Friday 4/20 and visited friends in WA and OR the first 2 nights. Sunday night (4/22), in the middle of nowhere OR at 8pm (as dark as it gets), with 571 miles on the car, the check engine light, DEF/service emissions warning, and countdown to death came on. We checked the owners manual, called OnStar (why not, it was there), and verified no damage would be done by continuing on. Side note, DEF was 94% when we picked it up. We drove through the night to a dealer in Idaho, the last part with speed limited as promised, but only to 65mph (the first step of the countdown). The first dealer ran diagnostics and was able to reset the warnings (the code was P20E9), but no parameters were out of spec when tested or when triggered, a computer/system gremlin?
Onward we went, a lot of miles to go before home. Lava Hot Springs made us forget all our worries that night. On 4/24, about 2 blocks after a refuel stop, the same warnings were back, but it went directly to a limited speed of 65mph, 1202 miles on the odometer. Another wonderful dealer in UT got us in and out relatively quickly. Most of the time (about 3 hours) was due to the mechanic being unable to access the modules of the vehicle to fully reset them. The engine light was out/codes cleared (same code, again not out of specs when triggered), but the countdown remained. We decided to drive on to Salt Lake City and stay with friends there if the car needed to be kept at the dealer. Thankfully, a few miles later the countdown cleared.
After a brief visit with friends in SLC, we were starting to become afraid of driving at night and getting stuck, so onward to Glenwood Springs to be rejuvenated in the hot pools once more...before sundown. We made it to Kansas city on 4/26, about 2400 miles total, and we got it all again for the third time. This dealer got the same code, diagnosed it as an overpressure problem in the reductant system and stated the tank assembly needs to be replaced, but...the part is not available anywhere nationwide. Our only option was to continue with the reset, wash-rinse-repeat cycle until we were home, then deal with it locally ("wait on parts to become available or pulled from the assembly line"). We had already altered our trip to avoid evening travel and the risk of being stranded.
Reset again at 3200 miles in OH (same code, awesome dealer had us in and out), and arrived home at 3524 miles (DEF 37%). First drive this morning everything is back on. SO....I understand something will have to be done before the problem goes away, but being Sunday and back to work tomorrow, no way to deal with it until later this week. Curiously, the rear camera service notice is on associated with the emission warnings. By associated, it is not on except just prior to, or during the check engine light, with the exception of when I picked up the car in Seattle. Maybe they reset it there, no way of knowing unless the resets are stored in the computer. I will post updates with any progress. Won't be driving the car as planned until it is sorted, short trips should be fine but it will only stay close to home until this is resolved.
The car was super to drive. It was smooth (not to loud except on bad roads), and had excellent passing in 6th gear...it just takes off. It was amazing in the steep Colorado mountains and would never need to be down-shifted if slow traffic weren't a factor. When climbing hills, downshifting is a MUST if speed slows below about 50mph, did best in rpm range over 2000 when climbing. On flat ground you can easily cruise in 6th anywhere from 45mph without downshifting.
Display readings for any one interested: Had 77 miles when I picked it up
Trip: 3446 miles, 46.4 mpg average
Best 25 mile average: 81.3mpg travelling east on I70 down the mountain into Denver (I know, mostly coasting, but still amazing)
Average speed: 52.2mph (was below 25 mph when I picked it up). While on the interstate/highway I was at 75-80mph a lot of the time.
A couple tanks were just over 600 miles
I still need to sit down and go over my readings and fill-ups to manually check the numbers.
Thanks for your input if you have had this code, and any resolution. I am looking forward to learning from you all and sharing knowledge about our cars.
