Non-Leather Steering Wheel?

6554 Views 15 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Merc6
I'm one of the drivers that often holds the steering wheel from the inside when on the highway and such. The stitching on the LT's steering wheel gets to be irritating after a long drive though. I've driven Cruzes with the non-leather-wrapped steering wheels, and actually prefer that feel to the one on the LT. The thing I was wondering though, was if there is a wheel with all the Bluetooth and cruise controls, but not with the leather wrapping?

All the ones I've found that don't have the stitching are ones with Bluetooth controls, but no cruise control.

Mine has all the Bluetooth controls and cruise control on a 2013 LS
Cruze & Audio, no leather or Bluetooth - STEERING WHEEL for 2012 Chevrolet Cruze|95227512
No Controls or leather - http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/chevro...wheel-and-trim-scat/?part_name=steering-wheel

You should be able to swap the Bluetooth controls from your current wheel
I had a 2013 Cruze LT with the RS Package. It had the Leather Wrapped steering wheel and I loved it. Now, I got a 2016 LT without the leather wrapped steering wheel and I hate it. The steering wheel is very rough and it's actually irritating my hands terribly - even on short drives. I didn't even think of this when I first got the car. It was after I got the car and did some driving that I started noticing this.
I have to wear gloves to avoid the irritation. I'm going to see if I can get the leather wrapping put on the steering wheel.
Do they make a leather wrapping that's easy to put on over the existing steering wheel? I don't want to start stitching a leather covering on. I thought I saw that they have a covering that fits right over the existing wheel and you don't have to do anything else. The standard steering wheel is ridiculous. It's very rough and porous - almost like sandpaper and it's irritating my hands terribly. I had the leather wrapped wheel on my previous Cruze and it was great. Don't know why they couldn't just make the leather wrapped wheel standard or at least make a smooth steering wheel that won't rip your hands apart. Very frustrated.

It was standard on all models and slowly GM decontented the car every model year and in 2015 or 2016 removed the leather wrapped steering wheel from the 1LT. You could pay the dealer to install the leather wrapped wheel out of the 2LT/LTZ. But you might be shocked at the cost.

Its bad enough GM adds to the cost of the car every year, yet they also remove features/options?

This is my issue with most cars, then the skin on my fingers get used to it or wear a spot down for me to be comfortable.

As said above, 2LT is what you needed to be for leather now. Not a fan of the non leather wheel. The feel is soo off as it's not the usual 2000's foamy kind you would find in an Impala.

Used ones come up and new ones from the Camaro are also an option. Find someone who swapped to Swede or look for a Sonic RS wheel. Sonic RS wheels actually say "RS" on them.

No slip on leather covers I'm aware of. I have a older car and the leather wheel went to crap. YOu saw my thumb grooves worn in plus sun damage. I had the option to swap wheels with a new fancy $500 flat bottom one, buy used or hand stitch $200 cover as you stated you didn't want. YouTube video for it was sped up and still was like 9 mins long to stitch start to finish. I ended up finding a used one 90% better than my old one.

I hope the 2nd gens aren't like this for 2017.

Each to his own on this subject, both my 2LT and Supra have leather covered steering wheels, kind of like these, motorhome has a phenolic steering wheel, didn't care for this so purchased a cover for it. Really have to stretch these things to put them on and available in different colors.

Could also buy a pair of these, racing gloves, only 180 bucks a pair.

Finger less driving ones also kinda protect that part of the finger that touches the seems of the stitch.

I can't stand the feel for gloves, I fight the feeling of that vs cold wheel and shift knob after -20 night parked car.

Current gloves for cold wheel driving duties, slightly overkill.

The full Neoprene back repels the elements while the synthetic leather palm provides excellent grip and feel. Suregrip reinforced non-slip patches are on the palm, middle, ring and little finger for maximum grip. Velcro closure maintains snug fit. Full Kevlar Lining For Maximum Cut Resistance.

I spoke to the dealer about putting leather wrapping on the steering wheel and he said you have to take care of that yourself. I really liked the leather wrapped steering wheel on my 2013. Now, I get a new Cruze and it doesn't have the leather wrapping? They should be adding features, not taking them away as each model year goes by. And I noticed, the leather wrapped steering wheel was not an extra on previous Cruze 1LT's. I appears it was standard.

Right now, I'm driving with gloves with my fingers exposed. The non-leather wrapped steering wheel that I have is a horror. It's rough like sandpaper and it irritates my hands terribly. I went to an auto parts store and they had steering wheel covers, but non of them were real leather. I hate that I have to drive with gloves on and it's the winter time. What happens during the summer? I certainly don't want to wear gloves then.

Does anyone know of a particular auto parts store where I can get a leather wrapping steering wheel cover for a decent price that's easy to install? I saw one on the web, but you have to stitch the wrapping in place with needle and thread. I don't want to get into that.

Easy and cheap are mutually exclusive when it comes to anything hand-made or in real leather.

FWIW I prefer a non-leather wheel as it is very easy to keep clean. My Cadillac has a wood wheel which is very nice to the touch and a dream to keep clean.
Installing a wheel isn't as much of a nightmare as it sounds. When I did it on my 10 year old car I didn't need a puller. If you already have infotainment and Cruze the swap is simple. My leather wheel has shown wear in 2 years but the price of the Camaro wheels are so cheap I'm not regretting it.

Tomco, what are you using in your wood part of the wheel? I got a MOMO wood wheel to replace my old MOMO wheel and haven't gotten that far into it. Pledge sound like its the right thing to do but not sure for automotive and direct sun purposes.

The wood wheel is OEM from the factory and was a part of the Lux lll package. It's finished in somekind of high gloss urethane I presume. I just run a moist towelette across it once every week or so. The car is garaged all the time so I've never thought about any protection for it.

For your MOMO I'd suggest a teaspoon of murphy's oil soap mixed in a cup of water. This is what I use to clean my Steinway (that cost more than a Cadillac) piano.

I had a Caddy with the wood steering wheel - but only part of the wheel was wood - I believe where you would normally put your hands. The rest was leather wrapped. The wood was great - nice and smooth - and it looked good.

Regarding the Cruze, if they decided to get cheap and take away the leather wrapped wheel, then put a comfortable standard steering wheel in. This steering wheel is really unacceptable. I'm going to insist that the dealer put the leather wrapping on at their cost. I'll get a note from my doctor that the wheel is messing up my hands.

By the way, I had my previous Cruze with the leather wheel for over 3 years and it showed no signs of wear.

Same here, only top section is wood. The top half that sees mostly sun so I try to leave the wheel upside down when I remember.

My wheel damage may be from belt buckles when turning or on entry/exit. I'm sure losing weight or getting a flat bottom wheel may remedy this.
