Sorry if this issue has been brought up but I couldn't find much since its kind of vague and I don't know the problem.

Engine makes a whirring to squealish sound, on and off, for seconds (~10) at a time, pretty often.

Happens when parked or moving. It just started happening the other day, randomly.

Checked GM recall website, nothing.

~15000 miles on odometer, no CEL or anything.

Help/Thoughts?

Any pattern to it? If it happens at low speed when you turn the wheel, it might be the belt slipping due to the power steering.

Power steering is electric......no belt to slip.

If you can get it to make this sound, idleing with the hood up, pull the dipstick and see if it changes or disappears.
Your description is approaching that of a dry crank seal on the damper side (belt side).

The dealer is instructed to replace the crank seal and inspect the check valve in the intake manifold.
If the valve is stuck (can't be seen through the port) the manifold is to be replaced as well.

Thanks, Ill try that next time I get the chance! Good to know info..hopefully not the case though, as that would be pretty .. disappointing to say the least.

If the components mentioned are the cause of the noise they are covered under your 5yr 100k powertrain warranty.
Things fail.....thats why guys like me get to make a living.

Yeah I know, but Ive never had to undergo as much critical component change in any of the cars Ive owned, warranty or non warranty.

Especially with, I'd assume, the wait on parts like the crank seal and intake manifold. And with my local dealer not giving loaners (or even courtesy rides), as this would be a more than one day process, its semi-moderately inconvenient.

However, I do understand things fail and the 100,000mi powertrain warranty is nice (I drive around 20k miles a year).

update: did not notice it during a short cruise to get food. However, I noticed it immediately come on after I parked, for only about 4 seconds. Its definitely more of a higher pitched whirring sound.
Opened the hood, waiting a few minutes for it to come back on, but it did not.
