Plastic VIN Frame on Passenger Side Floor Board.

Just curious, does anyone know what the plastic frame on the passenger side, front floor board that reads "VIN" is for? It doesn`t seem to have anything in it. Is the VIN stamped in the floor under it? I have a 2014. Thanks.
