Radiator Fan and AC works infrequently

Hi there, I'm new to this forum so sorry if I post this in the wrong place.

I've been trying to fix an issue I've been having over the last 7 months or so. I have a 2013 Cruze with 64K miles. My radiator fan I notice works maybe about once every other week? I was at a shop for a thermostat coolant leak and they fixed that and the radiator fan problem but a month afterwards the fan stopped working. No overheating issues thankfully, but it's unbearable to drive with no working AC. Heard on some posts that the AC works at highway speeds but when the fan does not work at any speed the AC doesn't work at all.

Maybe someone can help me out because I would rather not have to pay $800 to replace my entire fan assembly if it works somewhat.

Welcome. Just for responses, which engine do you have
$800 is probably what it's going to take. They're known for blowing the resistor pack which is part of the fan assembly.

They usually work on the high speed though.

At freeway speeds you have airflow. The fan only comes on when you're mostly sitting or slow speeds.

Sorry, I have the 1.4 turbo.
You can buy the resistor packs now from Ebay for about $13. The problem is if you are having to pay a mechanic then its really not worth going cheap because they will want $700 for labour in any case and its always a bit of a crap shoot on the quality of aftermarket parts.

Now if you can do it yourself then heck yeah, $13.. or even $85 for a whole aftermarket fan is worth a few hours of DIY wrenching.
You need to confirm the fan/resistor pack itself is not working first which is pretty simple. A number of posts can be found recently on this forum on how to do this.

See my last ost on this link (Mar 28th) for an easy test procedure. Cooling fan issue

I know it works on all 3 speeds, the problem is that the lowest setting (which is supposed to come on when the car starts or when the AC is on) works sporadically (once or twice a month) and even at operating temperature, the fan and AC do not turn on. As I mentioned, a previous shop got it to work fine for about a month before it just stopped and the issue came back.
You let the car idle and waited for the fan to kick on? I believe 231*

It's possible you might have a different issue.
If you have a multi-meter you should check if the fan is actually getting power at the lowest speed where it isn't working. you can unplug the connector, turn the A/C on, and see which of the four pins is getting power. The fan essentially runs variable resistance for the different fan speeds, and each speed will have power going to a different pin in the connector.

There's a wiring diagram for the fan system on this forum that lends quite well to do any kind of work with the rad fan. If worst comes to worst and you've gotta change the fan itself; it really isn't too bad to do it yourself if you break the prop rod holder off of the car 😂 (small pinch weld, a bolt also holds it in), then it can come right up and out between the radiator and exhaust manifold without taking the upper support & bumper off.
