Rear Disc Brake conversion concerns

I know this has been brought up before as a thread starter, but I called the dealership to verify whether or not this upgrade would void the factory warranty but someone hasn't called me back yet from there. I left the service advisor my name and phone number and reason why I was calling...so idk. Without a actual yes or no answer from Chevrolet, do you guys think this will void the warranty? IMPO..i believe it would since its aftermarket and not oem, but the LTZ models have 4 wheel disc brakes so then again, there isn't really any difference. Fill me in peeps=]

On your rear brakes (or any brake-related components - ABS pump, etc) - yes.

Rest of the car? Nope.

Why do you need rear discs? I doubt you race the car or drive many hilly roads in Iowa...
I hate drums..they are a pain to work on and I think it compliments the wheel...especially if you paint the calipers. I usually powder coat mine lol. Plus id much rather have discs anyways due to parts labor is cheaper to work on them.

Yeah if I'm painting the caliper there is no way in **** will I paint the drums to match.
It's a fun job. I've done it once and I'll probably never do it again. Just not worthwhile since the drums on manual transmission cars generally last the life of the car. As mentioned above it will void the warranty on the brake related parts.
For ease of maintenance and shear stopping power would take drums any day. Ever see disk brakes without power brake assistance? Disks also used that way overprice combo parking and service brake caliper, instead of being a ten buck job, can be as high as a 600 buck brake job.

For appearance, good guess as to what looks prettier, a drum or a rotor, drums can be painted, rotors cannot. Besides on my Cruze, have to get down on my hands and knees to view the difference.

In terms of conversion, would get a shop manual and a parts book to learn the difference and even a second mortgage, new cables, lines, do these things even use proportioning valve, ABS wheel sensors, cabling, parking brake cables, rear axle components, hubs, backing plates, and even some esoteric stuff like ABS module programing.

Just saying, this has to be done, and really don't know until you dig into it. 2LT came with disks, for me a negative, but been putting up with these things for over 30 years now, so why not a few more years! With the extreme high price on calipers, did look into converting to drums, that was far more complicated than a quick glance.

See at least the calipers on the Cruze are plated, so maybe won't be near the problem as previous GM products. Then this road salt that is suppose to save lives, eats those calipers like they are ice cream, and for a so called expert, can't do a single thing to save a pile of rust. Now I hear they are coming out with a new kind of liquid that is even more corrosive, but haven't verified that yet.

Then we have reasons for having a car, in our case, without one, would starve to death and reliability is is key. If you want one for show, don't play with your Cruze, get into building a custom job so you can spend thousands to win a two buck trophy. Ha, been there, done that, always someone a lot richer than you. But may get an honorable mention.

Hay chevy Deer season is almost upon us .. Go out and snag us a buck we are hungry !

Nick and I will come out that way next week . we''ll show you how to rip those ugly drums off so you can powder coat all you like . But only if you get that Buck all dressed out first and ready for some grilling . I like my burgers medium well done ..
That OK with you Nick ?
Have not had a delicious Venison Burger in Years .. Dang .

Lol, you'll change pads at least 3 times and probably rotors twice for every set of drums/shoes. It isn't cheaper at all. In all likelihood you will never have to do anything on the rear drums of your car except get them adjusted. That is A LOT of work/money just to be able to match some paint but if that is your flavor have at it. But don't dilute yourself into thinking it is "cheaper". Just doing the conversion will put you past a lifetime supply of shoes and drums let alone the maintenance of pads/rotors in the future.

edit: If you do decide to do it your first stop should be local junkyards and see if you can find a Z-link disc brake rear axle. If you are gonna do it may as well go all in and make it easy

Call my son, one shot Nick, until last year, only wounded a deer, so had to give it one more to put it out of its misery.

Wife is also a deer hunter, but she doesn't like guns, so used the right front fender of the Cruze for that.

Ha, I am more interested in a Black Angus steer, but to get one of those, normally have to give the rancher a couple of bucks first. Well maybe a couple of bucks more.

That's the way I would do it to, you get a lot more for less money. Plus I think the Z-link is a more tangible gain than the rear disc conversion. This car just doesn't need the discs, the drums do just fine. I also like the pedal feel of the drums, it is easy to adjust the pedal up.

No the only reason why I want it is for when I go lapping next year I don't want brake fadding.

You would be much, much better off finding something decent for the front brakes.

They're set up to be quiet and stop the car ONCE from a high speed. They're absolute junk for repetitive use - I can fade mine within 5 switchbacks on a twisty road.

Yup, with as much braking as the rear brakes actually do if you are worried about fade work on the fronts.
H yea fronts will be first I would love thay extra handling tho.

Heres the thing about the word "void" when referring to warranty. Nothing you can do to your car will ever officially "void" your warranty. And say for example if you change the rear brakes to disc, then the fuel pump goes out, the pump will still be covered under warranty unless they can prove you changing the brakes was the cause, and is illegal for them not to cover it without said proof under the magnasson moss warranty act of 1975.
It will void the warranty on your brake and ABS system though

Seriously? Nothing is easier to work on than a disc brake, and stopping power is the main reason why drums were abandoned on the front of cars long, long ago... cars today actually HAVE stopping power, while cars with front drum brakes just slow down. Gradually.

Ever see a car made in the last 30 years without power brake assistance? :)

Yeah, my Bug would NOT stop in any kinda hurry, especially down a hill.

Yes - apparently some 2011-2012 1.4T Automatic Cruzen :) and now about 136,000 BMWs. BMW just announce a recall for loss of power assist braking at low speed. I don't know if the BMW problem is related or not other than being in the same situations - low speed with "smaller" motors.
