Rising gas prices...aren't you glad you bought a Cruze now?

As I watch the gas prices go up here in Oklahoma where we usually have some of the lowest prices in the nation, I am so glad I have a gas saving 2017 Cruze to drive ( averaging 34 city 39 hwy using premium 91). What surprised me when looking at compact cars and smaller how the Cruze mpg beats many. Almost have to get a hybrid to do better gas wise but the cost jumps too so not sure if it's really a savings all around. Ironically the carmakers say the buyers are now buying gas guzzlers because gas has stayed low. Well what do these buyers do when gas starts to go up and up and up back to nearly $4 a gallon? I think us Cruze owners will be laughing and smiling at the gas pumps eh?

I'm right now considering getting a pickup, either trading the Cruze in or getting a 3rd vehicle. Then I filled up my tank this evening, um, maybe I won't. Gas has gone up about 30 cents here in the past 10 days. Not sure what's up, but I'm glad I'm averaging over 40 mpg on 87.
I wonder if history will repeat itself.
As a young man, back (waaaaay back) in the 60's, gasoline was running around 29.9 cents for regular, 32.9 cents for premium.
Nobody thought a thing of cars only getting ten to twelve mpg, and the fun stuff, (Camaro/Chevelle/Mustang/Fairlane/Challenger/Barracuda.....you get the drift), maybe eight/nine on a good day when you behaved yourself, was the norm.
Then came the first fuel 'shortage'.
Gasoline, for the first time ever, passed $.50 cents a gallon......today that is laughable, but back then, making $1.75 an hour was ok dough.

As soon as gas broke the magic fifty cents though........everything that burned fuel was traded in on the first wave of small imported cars.
Had I only had the resources and knowledge of the future (don't we all wish this?).

My wife saved the auto sales section of the newspaper (that thing that preceded the internet, heh heh) from our wedding day, 1971.
1969 Olds 442 4 speed car....$950.00. .......1968 HEMI Charger, automatic car (dual quads btw) $1350.00.

The dealers were giving these things away.....they were back lot specials because there were so many.....and they were cheap....even for those days by virtue of so many not wanted.

I figure, if we hit $4.00 again, it'll be a replay of the 70's......only this time, lots of unwanted, large SUV's.

I'm only averaging 19 mpg city on 89 octane... very little Idling, and I don't have a lead foot.

We have a diesel Cruze...diesel doesn't really fluctuate that quickly. I've really enjoyed not having to play the cheapest gas game anymore, as we get $0.10/gallon off at our local Meijer, making it cheaper nearly all the time than anywhere else.

However, my Volt makes me glad I bought it watching gas prices go up. I've only ever filled it up three times since buying it just over a year ago now - and the first fill-up was the night I got it (my salesperson drove it to my house to deliver it) to "start off" with a full tank. I went 6200 miles before filling the tank (8.9 gal) up.

My Cobalt runs 93, but gets about 25 no matter how I drive it. I drive it mostly all city, and I drive it hard (the way I intended when I built it), so 25 is pretty **** good, especially on 200-treadwear tires.

Then there's the Camaro which gets...gas mileage. At least it only needs 87!

Man, I wish i was old enough to buy that 68 Hemi.

I had a 67 Olds 442 with a 2 speed automatic. That was back in 87.

The tank in the Cruze is so small and I usually get 30+ MPG, so I haven't really noticed prices going up at the pump. A fillup is usually $25-30 and gets 300-400 miles depending on what I'm doing. I love not thinking about the MPG, and I've definitely stopped driving for gas mileage like I did with the '12 more often.

Part of me wants a larger car with more power sometimes, but I found even going to the 2.0T Fusion after owning a Cruze would be a huge drop in gas mileage that I didn't want. I drove my dad's V6 Jeep around to run some errands (started with 1/4 tank, empty a few hours later) and filled it up...and forgot that a full tank in that thing is dang near $50-60 even with gas on the "cheap" side. That made me rethink getting the little GMC Canyon I've been wanting.

rising gas prices

the main reason we purchased our 2017 cruze sedan td auto was because of the threat of rising fuel prices. in WA state there is even talk of the state adding $.30 additional gas tax. we are retired so we can choose when and where we drive. on our easy hwy drives we have been getting over 60 mpg with our best 50 miles @ 62.9mpg.

If you're comparing a compact car Cruze to an SUV or truck, then yes, it beats those. If you're talking about the Cruze versus the Corolla, Elantra, or Civic, then no. Wife and I rented a Corolla and a Elantra for a long mandatory trip and got 40 mpg highway on 87 octane gas, despite the EPA mpg saying highway was around 36. City MPG's were all pretty much the same, despite having bigger engines. Performance was similar. None of those vehicles had auto stop or a turbo. Nothing wrong with a turbo per se as long as it works, but it is another potential thing to have a problem with.

We've only got 2500 miles on ours so far, but currently are getting 29.5 to 32 mixed, 34 mpg 50/50 c/h, and 40-42.9 straight highway, depending on whether it's a level highway or very hilly, etc.

Almost have to get a hybrid to do better gas wise but the cost jumps too so not sure if it's really a savings all around. The wife and I are retired and living on SSD, so there won't be any laughing. We can get along just fine with a compact car for everyday driving, although we do have an 06 silverado 4wd for those occasional times when you absolutely need a gas guzzler to do something in particular, or the snow is up to your knees because it blew off the fields and onto the local roads. (we live in the boonies) We know however that not everyone can comfortably drive a compact car, like my wifes parents, or my granddaughter with 6 kids and a husband. I think that if there is anyone out there buying a gas guzzler simply because 87 isn't $4 a gallon right now should reconsider. Even if it doesn't go to that this summer, it will eventually anyway.

Speaking of prices, none of the other car options I previously mentioned had any issues with pistons cracking. I've heard one possible solution is 91 octane. Where I live 87 octane was 2.559 a gallon at the local station. If we use 91 octane as some have suggested to prevent pistons from cracking, the current price is 3.499 already. So if you're having to use 91 octane to prevent pistons from cracking, it doesn't compare to a similar class of car that can run just fine on 87 and doesn't have a history of that kind of problem. Using 91 instead of 87 is going to cost you where I live thousands of dollars more over 100k miles, all to allegedly prevent a problem that shouldn't be happening in the first place. :( If the car can't reliably run on 87, Chevrolet should've said so, so people would know what they're getting when they buy the thing, and comparing it to other compact cars.

Well here in Ontario I pay approx $1.38 litre and there is 3.86 per gallon. That of course is for Ultra 94 which unless I’m out in the sticks somewhere then I have to revert to 91. That said on my highway work travels I get 950-990km per tank.

A trip with my Explorer runs $270 for the 3 fill ups required the Cruze $120, since I drive alone it makes sense, plus the $87 every two weeks for payment is nothing.

Wow sounds like the volt is paying for itself! Have you noticed if your electric bill has gone up since having it and charging it?
91 premium was $2.77 a gallon for me a few days ago. So it's not too bad but it has gone up 30 cents to get there. We do have two new gas stations nearby with price wars keeping it lower than most. We have a 3/4 ton 2015 Silverado for hauling as we live on a small ranch but no longer have the horses and are retired and have a 5th wheel rv now. My husband has a harley freewheeler trike he uses a lot and his best mpg is about 30. I went from a 05 convertable mustang to my 2017 Cruze in Dec ( Xmas gift from hubby). Double the gas milage in savings going from the Stang to the Cruze!

Yeah, about $40-50 a month, but even with the CTD, we're spending roughly $100-$150 a month in fuel, per car, the Cav was around that as well, so it's a massive savings over the Cav, and a much nicer vehicle.

Not really. Had my 2012 Cruze for 5 years and was getting 37.8mpg.

Decided to go back to something fun and picked up a 2003 TJ and getting about 18.5mpg.

I was always big on mpg, but fun slapped that away.
I have the '17 Cruze (12.1 Gallon) and I average based off my driving habit and also weather between 36-42mpg to as high as 49-54mpg on the highway. I keep the RPM around 2000-2250 with speeds close to 70mph

My monthly fueling costs have gone from about $125 in my 2012 ECO MT to $45 with my 2017 Volt. Of that $45, $20 is provided by the Colorado School of Mines in the form of free four hour charging at work each day.

Yesterday I noticed the City of DeWitt's one public level 2 charger was wrapped in yellow police tape. Don't know what's up with that, it was working fine a year ago. If I had managed to get a dealer to sell me a new 2016 SparkEV I'd be sorely missing that charger right now, the plan was to have the city I work in pay for 60% of my winter EV fuel costs. In bad weather I probably couldn't even make the 72 mile round trip without charging at both ends of the commute.

(today I completed seven days of my commute on one tank of gas, the first time I'd ever done that many days without a 20 gallon Mercedes fuel tank)
Especially if most of that commute is on the freeway, as that degrades EV range at those speeds.
We are at almost $4 per gallon now in the bay area. Unbelievable. Oil companies are making a killing, and the government is raking it in with taxes as well, so they can all give themselves raises. Did you ever see the movie, Atlas Shrugged, where gas was $50 per gallon? We are on our way.

They are suggesting adding more tax to gas here as part of the idea to give teachers raises...they are paid the lowest in the nation so come April 2nd they are not teaching and protesting instead. If if the raise happens I'm glad I bought a gas saving Cruze to offset it as the teachers do deserve a raise.

They keep doing this and it never ends. First, they said we needed property taxes to pay for schools, police and fire departments. Then they added state and local income taxes to pay for schools. Then, they said we needed sales tax to pay for schools. Then, they said we needed car registration taxes and gas taxes to pay for these things. Then they add bond measures and parcel taxes. Then they added taxes and fees to electric, gas, water, phone and garbage. And they just keep adding more and increasing them endlessly. Despite all of this, every state still says they have the worst paid teachers in the country, and police and fire departments are underfunded, and the roads are the worst in the country, and on and on and on...
