dhpnet has hit the nail on the head and really summed up the tax situations in our country. Here in NJ we just recently added $.23 per gallon tax to rebuild our transportation fund to fix our roads. We were smart though and passed a referendum with it that states our politians CANNOT use the funds for anything else but the transportation fund - TIME WILL TELL IF THAT HOLDS. In any event I’m really happy with my 2017 LT - Cruze’s milage, handling, and drivability. (less the auto stop/start).

PS - Didn’t we fight a Revolution in 1776 against some King that taxed the **** out of us? “Just Sayin”

Cruze is great on gas, but not the best out there.
An Elantra 2.0 beats it by 10MPG on the highway.

If you ask me, I would like a 1,7 to 1,8 liter turbo engine, making 175-200HP, and a final drive that runs the engine at 2,5k RPM at 80MPH.

I just filled a tank 471 mi, 11.6 gal (the 'low fuel level' chime sounded at the very moment I was driving by the BP station), & computed 40+ mi/gal actual based on pump gals div. by odo reading (about 2 less than the Trip A mpg estimate for the tank). This included quite a few 70 mph highway miles and some slower speed city, suburban, country driving. Keep in mind I have the hatch/manual rated 38 hwy. Very satisfactory. But I try for economy. Driving the way I do isn't for everyone. No super-hypermiling, just not fast off the line. The opposite of leadfoots who blast from red to red.

The rating doesn't matter. At highway speeds of 75MPH, the Elantra has 10MPG more (60MPG) than the Cruze Eco (50MPG) instant, and at 100MPH it is 10-15MPG better (25 vs 40MPG instant).
At 60MPH they're pretty even.
The larger engine makes that driving at speeds below 50MPH, it'll lose in MPG to a cruze.

How dare you post actual quantatative evidence instead of just...random numbers! The instant mileage readout is rarely accurate, and definitely not something that can be used for any kind of actual comparison.

I bought my '13 cruze in late '13 when gas was $4/gallon. Not long after that it dropped to 2-2.50 and it's pretty much been there ever since. Now in my neck of the woods it's 2.60-2.80 for 87 today.
No I don't wish for gas to go back to $4/gallon because it still costs twice as much and it's a drain on the economy as well.

I would be much more concerned about a ticket/losing my license. Here in Hellinois you can get a reckless driving ticket for anything more than 20mph over the limit. That's a class A misdemeanor. Up to 1 year in jail and 2500 fine.

Yep - same here in Michigan, at least the 20-over being Reckless and a misdemeanor. I'm not sure what the fine/jail time is, but its four points on your license.

Premium (91) is $4.09 here in SoCal....good thing I went E85 and only paying 2.49 with an average of 22mpg. My 25 mile drive to work really sucks. I go from 2,500ft elevation to 1,000 and then back to 2,500...with hills in between and lots of traffic going from 20-80mph. I cant get the awesome mpg some of you report on your 1.4s

In some parts of Texas (85 MPH), Wyoming (80 MPH), and Utah (80 MPH) I can see people cruzing along at 100 MPH. However I don't think this happens very often simply because these areas are also very windy and high speeds combined with high winds makes for a very unstable road feel, regardless of vehicle.

And clearly at 100 mph, your goal is getting somewhere faster - not maintaing fuel economy.

In Hellinois there's so much "school" taxes there should be enough money to eliminate the federal deficit. I remember back in the 70s when lottery came to Hellinois it was supposed to bail out the school system, hah they just ended up with more debt. Then there was a push for river boat gambling and they again used schools to push this through but gambling had to be on the water and on a boat that actually left the dock. Long story short there are no more boats and it's all land based and boy do they protect the gambling area. Yup you guessed it the school system still needs more $$$.

They tell us exactly what it is for, not bad things, but at what point do we say no, no matter what? Our sales tax is 8.975% and some areas are 10%. They could ask for more new taxes if they wouldn't also ask to keep ones going that should expire. I am about to the point to say no on everything.

I'm only averaging 19 mpg city on 89 octane... very little Idling, and I don't have a lead foot. ?

I just came from a gas guzzling Chevy Blazer (16 mpg) to a 2018 Cruze hatchback and I am super happy to be getting 36 mpg on 87 octane. I havent had it on the freeway yet, but expect some nice numbers there when I do.
