I'm from South Texas and I'm wondering if anyone knows if the European style license plates are illegal or if it does not matter.

Right up the coast from you in Houston, Tx. I really don't think they are legal. They do have them on the net for purchase, but I wouldn't take the chance of putting it on my car unless I'm sitting at a car show. Only legal plates that you can purchase are from myplates.com.
