Transmission dropped from 6 to 1st gear at 70mph?

A friend of mines girlfriend has a LT with rs package and she said her transmission dropped from 6th gear to first at 70 MPH on the interstate. She said it red lined when this happened and it went back to 6th gear. Anyone ever seen or heard of this?

It didn't go to 1st, that I'll assure you. Pistons, transmission parts, etc. would be littering the road.

She must have pushed on the gas and it dropped to 3rd or something. The automatics Cruzes absolutely LOVE to drop gears at the slightest prod of the gas pedal.

It's better just to lock it into M6 mode on the highway, then downshift to 5th or 4th if you need passing power.

What he said , he is the resident authority on such subjects . I know Guiness !
He did forget to mention the car would have slowed to a crawl instantly.

I told her the engine would likely be in pieces as well as the transmission. I also told her that not every car is going to be close to being perfect. They will show their ugly face sooner or later because she had this shitty attitude about the cruze and she was all pissed because it isn't performing like she wants. Mine showed all kinds of ugly faces to me when I had my LT. First thing to go bad was my AC pressure sensor at 1541 miles....but that didn't change what I think about the cruze. I still love the cruze. I think its one **** of a car.

Anyone know the gear ratios off the top of their head to calculate what RPM it theoretically would be at when doing 70 mph?
The tach does not compute that high .
I take it I'm not the only one who thinks my friends girlfriend is off her nut? Lol

It would be at limiter even in 2nd at that speed.

Also let's be realistic here, if the car really did drop from 6th down to 1st/2nd whilst travelling at that speed without you having accelerated then the front wheels would lock up and she would have under-steered across the highway due to sudden extreme engine braking.

Yeah I asked a technician today at my dealership about this and he said it was unlikely that happened and that it sounds like she was being a little over dramatic. Chevrolet even said there is no bulletins on this particular issue. I personally think she Is just looking for a argument since she seems like a drama queen. Not to be an ass but thats what sounds like to me. I've never heard of a car just suddenly do that out of the blue.

VW Group's DSG auto's have been doing it. It allegedly lead to a death here in Aus last year and after much negative media attention due to many other claims they finally caved in and did a recall a couple of weeks ago after flat out denying any issues for months.
holy crap. Is the cruze popular in Australia? It really is here in the U.S. In fact, the further I went south, the more I saw lol. No joke. I went to Daytona beach florida this past February for the Daytona 500 and the whole way there, I saw anywhere from 1000-1500 cruzes scattered everywhere. Back on topic lol. My cruze has never done this transmission thing. I know it can happen at any time....just don't think that how I was told from my friends gf today is very legit. How could it possibly just shift down to first gear from 6th going 70mph on the interstate?! It doesn't seem like its logic to me. The only transmission problem I heard from the cruze from Chevrolet/gm themselves is there has been incidents where customers had poor shifting at highway speeds and in town speeds. Other than that, im not sure.
I know my ECO MT's 3rd gear red-line is around 90 MPH and the engine will cut out at 85 MPH in 3rd. It would have had to drop to 2nd in order to red-line at 70 MPH. I agree with jblackburn that it went to 3rd. 3rd at 5000 RPM is very loud when compared to 6th gear at the same road speed.

So most of you would agree with me that she is over exaggerating a bit? I don't even know her all that well and she seems like a huge drama queen and a pain in the ass.

Yea they're currently Holden's #1 selling vehicle and ours have been assembled here in Aus since 2011 (imported prior). The Cruze overtook the Commodore (what your Pontiac and SS is based on) which used to be the #1 selling car in Australia for almost 15 years straight a few years ago.

For the "small car" segment the Mazda 3, Toyota Corolla and Hyundai i30 sell almost twice as many units per month as the Holden Cruze but it then slots it at 4th position.
