I've been using K&N drop ins on my cars since 1992 with no long term, high mileage accumulation problems, so I'd say K&Ns are fine on normally aspirated engines. Based on what I've read, I'd not use one on the Chevy 1.4L turbo motor. Too much potential damage to the turbo.
