Calling all CruzeTalk folks to the fourth annual Watkins Glen Opening Day Meet! This year opening day at The Glen is April 16, 2016

I spoke with Rob at Watkins Glen and reserved a track time for our group

Cost: $25/car for 3 paced laps of the Watkins Glen racetrack.
Place: Watkins Glen, NY Opening Weekend - Watkins Glen International
Date: April 16, 2016 (it's a Saturday)
Time: Time on track: 12:30 PM (tentative). We need to be there 45 minutes ahead of time to pay and stage. So we'll roll out of Watkins Glen town and zip up the hill at about 11:15 AM to arrive at the racetrack at 11:45 AM. If you get separated, say you're with the CruzeTalk.com group going onto the track at 12:30 PM. Or look for the group of Cruzes.

Rob from Watkins Glen had the following reminders: 55 mph speed limit, stay single file, no passing, and no other horseplay. Failure to obey will mean the rule-breaker gets kicked off the property, no questions asked.

More information:

Activities: Lapping the track, pictures, getting dinner at Jerlando's, the best pizzeria in the Finger Lakes (there isn't much inside seating), or parking at Lakeside Park. There are first-come-first-served pavilions there. The outdoor activities will be as weather permits. Light jackets are recommended, as it is late April in upstate NY! Depending on the weather, there is a Dunkin Donuts, a Wal-Mart and a P&C grocery store in town if the weather is bad. This will be a "closed-hood" and "no car work" meet. No time/space to do any car work.

If you don't want to do the racetrack but still want to meet, you're more than welcome to join us! Just let us know.

Meeting place in Watkins Glen: The Wal-Mart in town. The address is: 515 E 4th St, Watkins Glen, NY. It's very easy to find.

Meeting time: 11 AM.

Past years were a blast! Those of us who went had a great time.

We need 10 cars to register for our own slot. Last year our group was less than 10 so we were put with a group of Z28 & ZL1 Camaros, nice cars, but I won't comment on the drivers. Who's interested? Looks we have enough confirmations for a guaranteed slot!!! We still are open to more members / non members.

List of folks confirmed so far:

blk88verde (probably my GTO)
blk88verde's daughter (Mini Cooper)
Tomko
Oilburner + son (WRX)
Jvegas04
Kman220
anthonysmith93 + friend
blkverde's son (BMW AH3)
Tim (Volvo S70R)
snc333

tentative:

Can't wait!
was fun last year only this time wifey says shes not the passenger... he he
Yea, last year my wife skipped being a passenger.
We will be there again this year! Can't wait!
I'm in for sure. Missed it the past couple years.

And for anyone who is on the fence about going or not they just completely tore up the track and repaved it so it should be really nice to drive it

I would love to get back up to that area (with the Volvo, of course), but I'm moving that weekend :(.

-for the past two years we had a Volvo in our group - my daughters S70 two years ago and an S60R last year. The S60R was following me, if I recall it was making some tire noise through the turns.

I'd LOVE to go, but I don't think I could drive that far. LOL
Okay I may actually come...anyone know of affordable hotels in the area? Everything I can find online is much too expensive.

Good question. It looks like I may also stay over a night or two.
If I were to come, could a non forum member join me? In his own vehicle (A Subaru) if not I understand, he'll just ride with me if I'm able to make it
As far as hotels - I have stayed about 20 minutes away at Horseheads, not real cheap but certainly cheaper than at Watkins Glen. I was just about to make a reservation - so your question is timely.
With regards to non members - they are welcome. Non Cruze cars are welcome too! Last year we had a Cadillac, 2 BMWs and a Volvo. I am bringing my GTO this year. Tell your friend they are welcome to drive in our group with the Subie.

Check Hotwire - I just made a reservation for $61+ taxes at a Horseheads NY hotel, it included hot breakfast. It is a 15 mile drive to Watkins Glen.

Reminder - we are one month away from opening day! It would be nice to have at least 10 cars to go onto the track. That way we won't be mixed in with another group. As noted - members / non members / non Cruze cars are all welcome.

nice! will do.
55 mph limit? We go faster than that to get there! I took my other car to Gateway International Speedway a few years ago and they allowed 100 on the straight stretches.

In reality - my son said he saw 118 last year in his 2013 BMW Active Hybrid 3. Two years ago with my GTO - I recall maybe 110. So no way will we be going that slow.
