So started working on my girlfriends 17' Trax that we just spent 4k on from the inlaws after it went to pouring smoke on them while driving Well after a little digging and seeing the pcv related issues in reltion to what symptoms it was showing i decided it could be a fairly simple fix with the pcv fix kit well after diving in and removing the intake and valve cover this is the sludge buildup i found and wanted some opinions or advice as to any other tasks or parts to look at while im already balls deep into this project to prevent possibly being downed again from problems deriving from the original onset of pcv issues

In my Orlando engine 1.8 I also had the problem with mud undr the camshaft cover. I cleaned it cerefully with wooden stick and after that I put a new camshaft cover , becouse the integrated oil separator was also full of mud. Then I added engine flush liquid into hot oil, flushed for 15 min, and changed the oil and oil filter. I dont know why mud was formed, I regullary chenged original oil, drive enough long distances. Probably the oil need to be changed after drive and still hot. Also, after that change of camshaft cover, the oil concumption is gone and also jerking cold engine.

Don't use the quick flush products just because they're cheap! Engine solvent flushes are for not too dirty engines, else you risk clogging small oil galleries:eek:.

Use a thinner 5W20 oil with a 'sludge cleaner additive' for 2,000 miles. 'Auto-Rx' is one of the best sludge cleaners.

Drive it out of the 'LSPI range' conditions (lower speeds rev the engine some, never lugging it, beware of fuel saving low rpm going up 'inclines').

2nd oil change (3,000 mil) go back to 5W30 Add and eng oil conditioner additive for further eng cleaning and sealing.
(chart bellow allows for saving some $$$ this step).

3rd oil change you're off the hook, Dexos1Gen3 and can now drive fuel saving style. Choose a high mileage oil if you can OR add some seal/gasket swell 'oil conditioner' yourself.
Good luck!

PS: First remove all the gunk you can by hand, top & bottom of the engine if you dare/need to remove the sump.

Pick up some HPL Engine Cleaner and monitor the filter. First filter change/check at 500 or 1000 miles and extend oil filter change interval from there based on how the filter looks.
