I've thought about an F40 swap into the car, but given it is my wife's car...I do not think she would be overly happy.
I do tend to drive the car in manual mode a lot in mixed traffic - a specific example is US-31 up in Traverse City, which we just had plenty of experience with again a couple of weeks ago. When we're on it in the morning going from the hotel West to either of the peninsulas or downtown, there's a fair amount of traffic (much of it tourists), so the typical speed is between about 35 to 50 (speed limit being 45), but lots of consistent throttle, on throttle, off throttle...and holy **** does that thing clunk around if you just leave it to its own devices. Lock converter, unlock converter (it's usually staying in the same gear), clunk, clunk, clunk, clunk (especially because our LF axle makes that somewhat common clunk noise when it experiences a shift in power), shudder, confuse, etc. So I just tend to leave it in a gear, which also seems to prevent it from locking/unlocking the converter and stops most of that behavior.
It does pretty well in regular driving acceleration, assuming you don't have to slow down after speeding up. I tend to have to get into the throttle early if I have to pass someone in oncoming just to make sure it's actually going to downshift in any reasonable amount of time so I don't die. And it neutral slamming itself on occasion is always fun (tends to be after long freeway stints where the fluid has drained back a lot).
This engine with the 9AT would be absolutely stellar. Ours has the Trifecta tune (which supposedly tunes the transmission, but as far as I can tell it does not - nor is anyone really aware of
anyone who can tune this transmission), so there are occasions where it really surprises me (seems to do its best with TC/SC turned off).
