This little article just came in via my Norton subscription and I thought folks here might like to see it.

Can Your Car Be Hacked?

Just something to ponder whilst enjoying the ride.

Jim

...everything can be "hacked"...just ask Microsoft, Apple and the FBI and CIA!

...disabling On-Star™ only closes one "door" (of multiple) into the many, many computers inside your car.

I dont use either Norton or anything microsoft based for my security. I use something a little different. Through various tests, I have shown my choice to outperform almost any other AV suite on the public market. I'm happy with it and I'm not going to force it on anybody else.

As far as car hacking goes, I really dont approve of all the various ways a dedicated hacker can gain access to the on-board computers in my vehicle. Although the Cruze isnt as bad as some. I will never own a vehicle with wifi access though. I would rather install my own car-puter and secure it as I see fit instead of trusting some unknown in a cubicle somewhere. That, and my car-puter isnt tied in to any of the on-board systems other than audio out. Popular mechanics did an article on this very thing a few issues back. Very informative.

I'm guessing Symantec is pretty close to announcing Norton Antivirus software for cars in the near future. :)

It would've been nice if the article pointed to links to the incidents and research that they point to. Without it, it's hard to verify all of their claims, and they probably want that to be the case. At the end of the day, Symantec/Norton makes their money out of fear. They are selling people on the idea that you are not safe unless you buy their product and do as they say.

Yeah, viruses are out there, and I wouldn't use a Windows PC without A/V software installed. But I don't think we're quite there yet when it comes to cars.

Yes, I'd say the dirt bags are focused on tablets and phones now.
