I do not know the details yet, but my service manager and several others have mentioned hearing the same. It is safe to say that GM is in fact making a GM Performance Parts Stage 1 Kit for the Cruze 1.4. Not sure about the 1.8, 1.6, 2.0D, but 1.4T is definitely in the making. Any that has information, please post, as I will inform you folks as soon as I find anything out.

I do know that GMPartsDirect is currently selling two ECMs, one standard/stock, one labelled 'Performance'. That's all I know for now.

My guess is a package at a ridiculous price.. including any of the following:

-ECM tune
-TCM tune
-Intake system
-Exhaust system
-Front Mount Intercooler
-etc.

Kind of like what they did with the Cobalt SS's, they had different stage kits available for purchase that did not affect warranties.

Almost guarentee it lol but for the sake that warranty will not be affected by it, I'd skyrocket the price too, just for increasing liability of course. I bet they will design a kit that will exceed 200hp/tq. It would definitely be worth it, as long as it isn't $5k.. lol.

Did they mention when it might come out? Im going to google it right now to see if I can find anything more about it. 200hp for the cruze that would be amazingg that doesnt void warranty!

It may not be for a good while, especially if they are still creating it. I wouldn't hold your breath to be honest, may very well be months if not next year that they release this..

#8 ·
Well I guess I should start saving haha

If they got a significant bump in HP/torque without affecting fuel economy too badly I'd be looking hard at it. After all, nobody knows the engine like the engineers who designed it.

#11 ·
i am sure it will be more expensive than what its going to be worth, but who knows. i guess once its actually out and we can see what we get for the price they are asking is when we will know if its going to be worth it or not.

your list of stuff is about what i would expect to see in the kit, maybe even a bigger turbo will be available. what kind of turbo comes in our car, i know who makes it but not what model as in T3, T5, Ect... its kind of hard to see the turbo with the heat sheild covering it up. looks kind of small though..

#12 ·
I wouldn't think about upping turbo size after all this issues with pistons...

Would like to see intercooler (better then zzp), and other tweaks to up the timing instead of boost.

The Family0 series engine uses a Honeywell turbo. Design is similar to the Garrett T3 (Honeywell is the parent company to Garrett). but unlike most turbos on the market the turbo is partially housed in the exhaust manifold. Upgrrading the turbo would require replacing the exhaust manifold. Although the current turbo is capable of spooling in about half a second, and is capable of producing in excess of 20psi of boost.

We are looking at changing the MAP Sensors to 3.3 bar sensors so we can get more boost but i don't know if the small turbo will put out enough air to get up to 30 psi boost. We should be at about 20 psi with the Tune from Vince. Of course we don't have a warranty anyway when we put GM engines on boats.
The GM price on the Stage 1 kit for the 2.0L Turbo LNF engine was $ 650.00 and the local Dealer had to do the tune.

The stock turbo efficiency drops off hard over 140g/sec flow. The stock turbo is capable of hitting 30psi at lower flows, but the thrust bearings are a weak point and may not hold up for long. With the upgraded compressor wheel I installed in the stock compressor housing I am seeing around 150 g/sec flow at 24psi boost pressure at 6200 rpm (on the stock intercooler, exhaust, and intake manifold, running meth/water injection). The manifold pressure sensor can read over 30psi and does not require upgrading. The Boost pressure sensor before the TB can read a little over 24psi but it is only showing you the pressure drop across the TB so we can just max it out, but you will trigger a limp mode unless you change something in the code.

I would caution against running over 23 psi on the stock heads at engine speeds over 6000 rpm. The valve springs are soft and will allow the valves to start floating, which can quickly lead to valve damage or worse.

...for the curious, here are the pertinent part numbers for the turbo in our Cruzes:

• OEM part number: 55565353
• Garrett part number: 781504-0001 and -0004
• Garrett Model number: MGT1446MXGL

...it's the same turbo as used in the 2009-2010 Opel Astra, Corsa, Meriva and Saab 9.1.

Just thinking about this kit and the lack of small car performance in Chevrolet's portfolio makes me wonder why Ford doesn't bring the Focus RS over from Europe, 300+hp, 300+tq and 33.X MPG. With the exit of the cobalt SS there is absolutely nothing in Chevys portfolio that gives those who want solid performance with decent fuel economy. I think the RS would do well if priced right. I've never owned a Ford but I would take the 33.X MPG and the performance over a 28/39 option with half the tq/hp. That being said I'm hoping Chevy will actually bring a Cruze Coupe into the picture that can appease those who aren't in it entirely for the fuel economy (hand raise). The Buick Regal and Verano are probably the most powerful cars in the lineup short of the Camaro. The Cruze is a great car and it has potential but still leaves a bit to be desired on the performance side. Hope the kit actually "surprises", like most others suggest it probably won't.

the V6 camaro is in those power, MPG and price ranges as what it would cost for either the Focus or a steroid ridden Cruze. Camaro's are selling very well so I would say GM has a car in the nitch, although not a small one. Why would they put something up that would compete with a good selling performance car? You can bet not as many people would buy a hot rod Cruze as the Camaro who are looking for performance. Cruze is out there to appeal to the masses by being efficient and useful and is not intended for performance. Not saying GM won't roll out a faster Cruze, but I bet they aren't in a hurry to do. When Cruze sales slow down you may see it as a gimmick to get people to buy another one, but they are selling them as fast as they can make them right now so why mess with a good thing? In the end they are selling Camaro's and they are selling Cruzes so they have no real NEED to change things right now.

The Focus RS has a turbocharged 2.5L inline 5cyl. Alittle better/bigger engine.. lol. Not to mention the price is about $38,000? No thanks!

That kit is expensive, there's numerous thread on here about it. But none of us cared to get it for the simple fact that its expensive and reliability is not confirmed. If you had money for that kit, you better get stronger internals and valvetrain for it too.

The other option is to get a Verano Turbo. Except it weighs 400 lbs more than an Eco, and so it likely won't handle nearly as well as an Eco or a LTZ.

#30 ·
You can not find it cause it is not out yet. He was just giving a heads up something is coming out in the near future :)

Even a base model SS Camaro is $38. So which would you choose, a badass Camaro SS producing 426hp/420tq, or a 300hp Ford Focus. Hmm..

Hey I conceeded on the price tag issue, no need to be a smartass. Second of all the Camaro is mid-size car NOT the Cobalt SS type car that GM needs, which was my point to begin with, the two cars aren't even in the same market. Third of all I've test drove those Camaros they are big, bulky and frankly not fun to drive at all! You get no feel for the power with the way they have the driver buried in that hog. Is it a fast car yup, but I would bet anything it would suffer immensely on an autocross circuit versus the smaller performance cars, which is why comparing the two is just stupid.

It's ringlanding chunking time.

So many people are going to be chunking pistons due to, over fueling to keep knock down, very low ignition advance, and people thinking. HEY it has a warranty on it!

This will not end well.

Unless GM does something with E85 retro-fitting.

Rodney King - "Can't we all just get along?" I say go for the Ford Focus. Power to Weight ratio.

Focus RS FWD - 3236lbs, 301bhp. .093hp/lb.

Camaro SS RWD - 3849lbs, 426bhp. .111hp/lb.

Camaro wins. Just saying :)

Agreed, though I was just stating the facts. Regardless, apologies Ecomaniac. :eek:ccasion14:

I really don't want to help anyone argue, BUT: You forgot to include the gear ratios for power transfer, different ratios can allow different acceleration, also think it would be more a matter of driver.

I knew a guy that was beating Corvettes in the quarter mile with a 95 Ford Escort.
