Could you evaluate on "operating temperature"? I don't know when it's at operating temperature because my cruze 2014 doesnt show coolant temp...thanks much!

that’s ok if you don’t know yourself, thanks for the explanation and reference to somewhere else! I’ll check it out
Realyl has nothing to do with whether or not I know the answer, but more with I hate typing and I answer the same questions hundreds of times. So when I can just redirect, I do.

I checked my reservoir with a Dexcool compatible coolant tester and the fluid maxed the needle out. I think my coolant concentration is too high. When I did my flush several months ago I used a 50/50 mix though. Should I be worried?
Look at the coolant level in your surge tank when the vehicle is at operating temp. It should be at the full line. If it is less, add distilled water for the best results, but regular water will work. If it is full or over full, after it has cooled off,, suck out what you can with a turkey baster and add the water then. That will bring the mixture closer to what you want. Having said that, if you know what the ratio of the mix is, assuming you or someone you knew added it, if it is less than 70/30, you should be fine.

Also do not mix Dexcool with other types of anti-freeze as it is very possible it will coagulate and plug the system. There are some that say they are compatible, but be wary.

Lastly, don't run pure antifreeze. As Maven said above, water is the best coolant. The antifreeze is just that, a way to keep the water from freezing with additives to help keep corrosion at bay.

It's just one of those Prestone ones that look like a turkey baster. It has the plastic floating arrow. It just floats to the maximum freezing temperature. I wasn't sure where it should be if it were a perfect 50/50 mix.
It's at the full line when hot. I did the flush with Dexcool concentrate and distilled water and did a perfect 50/50 ratio. I was just not expecting it to show as good to -50 or more, I thought that was too much concentrate possibly.
You should be good to go as that would be what I would do.. You could go to Autozone and ask them to check it for you just to back you up.. They may have the Refractometer type tester, although I am not sure if it is compatible with Dexcool.

Pretty easy so far. Used about a foot piece of 3/8" I.d. hose. And the prongs of an old plug in phone charger to get leverage on the pet **** head. For the radiator bleed screw I found a 25 cent quarter and vise script was the perfect fit.
I'll give you a dollar for a 24 cent quarter

An update: there are 2 ways to drain the coolant from the block. the coolant is pumped into the block in the front, when the block, turbo and oil cooler are full, the cylinder head then starts to fill and can exit at the water outlet. this is how air can easily be trapped in the upper parts of the cylinder head.

On the timing cover, under the water pump, is a bolt that will drain the block.

there is also a more accessible way on the turbo cartridge, this will drain the block and the turbo.

you can stick a hose in the tank and flush out the system or dump distilled water in.

this will drain 100% of the system
Do you have a picture of an assembled engine that you can possibly point to these plugs on?

?? Last Picture from what I can see is a block with the timing cover on it .. the bolt is just below the water pump .. the second one is on the side of the turbo which would typically be facing the radiator and core support.
Never had one of these out and needed to be oriented.

I’m wanting to replace the old coolant in my car but it’s winter and therefore temps below freezing. Any other options to flush the coolant and replace it other then filling it with water? I’d imagine filling the pipes with water could potentially cause freezing. Thanks!
Welcome Aboard!(y)

You should not be leaving the water in long enough to freeze. Right after you complete the flush you need to replace the antifreeze.

Just a quick note/question.

The Chevy website lists all 1.4 Cruzes from 2011-2015 as having a cooling system capacity of 4.25 quarts or 4.0 liters. Is Chevrolet wrong or is this thread wrong?

They list the 1.8 as 4.75 quarts or 4.5 liters.

This is important if you want to be aware of what remains in the car with each fill and what the ratio will be if refilled with Dex-Cool concentrate after flushing with distilled water.

Thanks for the procedure. I’ve gotten lots of information from this forum over the past 5 years but never joined until now.

Where did you see the listings?

I just joined yesterday. Thank you, XR, for this detailed and informative post. Heat shock...cold shock...coolant remaining in the block: I didn't know. I'm about ready to start flushing, and have one question.
I have an idea, SEEMINGLY clever, to cut down on the amount of coolant-contaminated water to dispose of or evaporate. But out of an abundance of ignorance about the workings and vulnerabilities of the cooling system, I'd better run it by this forum. I was thinking that after the radiator drains, if I start the engine and run it for, I don't know, 1 or 2 seconds, some of coolant still in the block will be pumped into the radiator where it will drain. (I'm not trying to completely drain the block this way. Even I have some sense that would be asking for trouble.) So, what do folks think about this?

"Right after I posted, I noticed that this thread started 8 years ago, and the most recent post was two years ago!"

So what, I prefer long meaningful threads as opposed to a million fragmented shallow ones.. You've got rDiT for that!

PS: XR is well missed by 'Us lot', as Colling Chapman would say (Lotus.. get it?).
He is in Healthcare Consulting now and has let go of buying his.. you guessed it.. Lotus!
He is still around, just not as prominent.
