Hey everyone,

I appreciate any help I can get. So my 2012 Cruze has been running tip top recently. I occasionally have gotten the message, "ac off due to high engine temp" but it has never affected my performance and that has been over 6 months of seeing that occasionally so I thought maybe it just got a little hot after a lot of driving, or maybe it was a sensor. But yesterday, I got that message, drove a little bit more, and got a message saying to idle the car immediately as the engine is overheating. I popped the hood and it wasn't smoking or anything. I have a code reader and it says P00B7 “Engine Coolant Flow Low/Performance." I take it to NTB because they have been fair to me before and they are saying not only new thermostat, but new water pump. I can't afford that. Anyone seen anything like this, potentially can advise? The car drove fine, at lower speeds, to drive it to the shop.

Thanks guys

I don't see anything wrong with their diagnosis. Both fail and could easily be the fault causing that trouble code. They looked at the car, and I have not.

These cars have little tolerance for overheating, so a classic case of pay now or pay more later. GM did have a 10 year/150,000 mile warranty on the water pump for the 1.4 (all Cruze except LS and Diesel). You'd need to find out the date it was first sold. Being a 2012, it's probably been over 10 years. That's assuming you're still under 150,000 miles.

Ask them to start by replacing both coolant temperature sensors and nothing else. There's one in the radiator, and another in the water outlet. This sounds like your main problem.

The thermostats usually fail open. The water pumps usually just leak.

Pick up the car, drive it around 5-10 minutes, and see if it fixes your issue.
