I have 2014 Cruze LTZ with push button start

The car failed to add a new FOB/Smart Key.

The car says there are currently 4 smart keys programmed (the Cruze can have up to 5)

The current FOB/Smart Key works perfect and every power option in the car works fine.

The Body Control Modules has this DTC set:
"B101E - 48 Electronic Control Unit Software - Security Code Not Programmed"
Status: Current
This Ignition Cycle: Not Run
Last Test: Failed Current DTC
Since DTC Clear: Failed
DTC History Status: History
MIL Status: Not Requested

I have 3 different methods for reading the security PIN required for FOB/Smart Key pairing and all 3 methods fail to read the PIN. I am using Topdon Topscan Pro and the 3 methods that fail to read the PIN are:
1) Read Immobilizer Password (BCMAUTO)
2) Read Immobilizer Password (ECM)
3) Read Immobilizer Password (ECM)-Type01

I am puzzled as to why I can't read the PIN ? Is the problem actually in the ECU (no security code is actually set) and how do I go about setting a PIN value in the ECU?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure if this helps:

DTC B101E

Circuit/System Description
Some devices must be configured with specific software, serial numbers, vehicle options, or other information. If a device was not properly configured after installation that module may set DTC B101E. The symptom byte information is for engineering reference only. No external circuit diagnosis is involved.

Conditions for Setting the DTC
The device is not configured properly.

If DTC B101E is set
1. Program the device that set the DTC.
2. Verify the DTC does not set.
- If the DTC sets, replace the device that set the DTC.

I suspect the failure to read the PIN is a function of the incomplete setup.

So the product I used to try and add a SMART KEY FOB is Topdon Topscan PRO. They advertise this item as being able to perform IMMO functions. Here is quote from their manual:

IMMO is an optional function allows you to perform IMMO related functions such as Number of Keys, Read Pin Code, Remote Control Learning, Add Key, Erase Key and All Key Lost.

Here is what happened when I used this tool

1) Performed a full diagnostic scan. No DTC codes were set on the car

2) Entered the IMMO software module and performed a "Read Immobilizer Password". There are 3 methods:
a) Read Immobilizer Password (BCMAUTO) - This method worked first try
b) Read Immobilizer Password (ECM) - This method failed (tried this 6 times always failed)
c) Read Immobilizer Password (ECM-Type01) - This method failed (tried this 6 times always failed)

3) Proceeded to the "Keyless System (CAN)" software module and attempted to add a SMART KEY. Picked "Number of Smart Keys" and the tool reported that I currently had 4 keys set. The cruze can have up to 5 smart keys. So I proceeded to "Add Smart Key". I was prompted to enter the password PIN. I placed the new FOB (OEM FOB with new battery) in the slot (made sure all other FOBs were not any where near car). Then it told me to wait 12 minutes. I waited for 20 minutes .. nothing the software was hung on that screen. I tried the FOB and it did not work.

4) I tried again and this time the "wait 12 minute" screen only flashed for about 1 second. Then I got this message: "78:The request message is received correctly, and the response is pending" with a "Confirm" pick button. I pressed "Confirm" and it brought me back to the main Keyless System (CAN) menu. I tried the FOB and it did not work.

5) I ran the full diagnostic scan again and DTC "B101E - 48 Electronic Control Unit Software - Security Code Not Programmed" was set.

6) I tried reading the password PIN again and all 3 methods failed.

Contacted Topdon support and gave them all this information. Instead of them giving me a patch for their software they blew me off. Here is their response: "sorry, that this device cannot support reading the password pin, it requires a professional original manufacture device." (support ticket 38607 ).

So am I correct in thinking that it looks like this Topscan Pro device corrupted the immobilizer password/ PIN in the ECM ? (as i didn't have this DTC before using the software and was able to read the PIN when the DTC was not set)
