800 Miles on Winter Blend Club!

I managed my first 800+ mile tank. DIC v/s the math was within .1 MPG. I had 60 miles until empty per the DIC. I believe a 900 mile tank will be fairly easy on a long trip. I keep loving this car more every day!

567Chief, did you get pictures of the DIC and gas pump showing the tank mileage and fillup? I didn't realize diesel fuel in the US also had winter blends.

Uh, burning 16.8 gallons of diesel fuel out of a 15.6 gallon tank takes more than a little "magic", ie:

16.8 GALS = 800.4 MILES / 47.6 MPG

Yeah I noticed the same math. I am also under the impression the cruze diesel uses a 15.9 gallon tank im wondering where this extra gallon is from.

I am willing to bet the cruze diesel is capable of reaching 1000 miles in a single tank which would require about a 63mpg average. The eco is able to achieve a 53mpg average if not higher. I mean I was able to average 51.6 mpg over 8,000 miles this past summer. I am talking basic weather conditions no favors from the wind.

Given the thread about 18 gallons in a Diesel it appears the CDT has a larger fill pipe than the gas versions.

Hm-m-m-m, last I heard, the same fuel tank is used in both models, gasoline and diesel, and only difference was pump assembly which limits capacity for Eco (obviously not in diesel)...with same tank, and same fuel cap/door location, would not expect GM to use anything but the same filler-tube?!?

Still amazed at the mileage some of you get. My best tank has been 42 mpg. Never been able to keep the average above 46 for very long. I do drive conservatively and coast to stop lights as much as possible. Pretty much already been driving the way the fuel economy thread says. Got in the habit of it driving my RAM 2500. My tires are set at the correct pressure. Maybe y'all are driving slower?

Driving styles and enviroment play a factor as well. My best MPG in my gas ECO is straight turnpike or freeway for high speeds and 34 mpg in 4th gear or 43 in 6th gear coast in non conjested city night time driving. Lowest speed I can hold in 6th is 37mph and thats pretty much a down hill coast an no acceleration power whatsoever. My 17's are set to 46 PSI all 4 corners.

Yeah I put over 16 gallons in mine the other day and didn't try too hard.

What part of NJ are you in? I get my best "City" MPG's in the Mt Laurel, Mt Holly, Hamilton, Bordentown and rare Atlantic City runs when I am there towards the end of the month vs here in Cleveland. I avoid turnpike when I can during rush hour especially heading into NY.

So after reading through some of these posts, it looks like many of you are running your diesels to "E". I was always told that in cold weather you should never get below 1/4 tank to avoid freezing and what not. Does this not apply with today’s modern cars? My car sits outside at night and all day at work. It was -15F Monday morning when I was leaving WI. It seems to me that a near empty tank in those temps would be problematic.

yeah you avoid goin < 1/4 tank so that frost doesnt form on the bare walls inside the tank then mix with the fuel once you fill it

the being at < 1/4 tank to start up isnt the issue, its the repeated practice that builds up the water in the fuel

how likely is it a problem? debatable...but thats why you drain the water out of your filter

GASOLINE volumetric expansion rate is 0.00056 per degree-F
..DIESEL volumetric expansion rate is 0.00046 per degree-F

Thus, diesel volumetric expansion is roughly 22% less than gasoline per degree-F (but diesel "foams" more than gasoline); see pages 34, 99 and 100 in this Chevron Oil booklet on diesel fuels:

SAE J398 - How fuel tank capacity is determined/advertised. Notice, especially, Appendix B on page 8, and the two "volumes" VAPOR SPACE and FULL RESERVE at the top of the illustration(!):

Congrats on a very impressive tank! I personally could never do this. I enjoy the power that this car has to offer too much. You must be the guy on the road that I'm thinking to my self "w(why)tf is this guy doing 40 in a 55" :) I'm quite happy with my 450 - 500 miles per tank.

I always run my tank down to the low fuel warning, and the most I could ever jam into the tank is 14.76 gallons - and that's even with diesel overflowing out of the filler neck.

FWIW the least I ever got in was 13.68 gallons.

I did the trickle to the filler neck trick today. Probably took me an extra 10 minutes or so watching the foam rise and fall until it held steady at the filler neck. This time it took 16.59 gallons from the fuel low message on the DIC.

I'm gonna take a stab at this in the summer. I've managed to get a tank averaging 50.3 mpg but I don't run it down too low in this weather with my commute. But well done! I'm afraid I'm gonna burn out the turbo from not using it but I can't help but watch the mpg on the dash at all times.... that's why I bought this car.

The turbo is always spinning when you're driving, but I also have a concern about not getting on it once in a while to keep everything operating properly. I am happy with my lifetime MPG over 42.
